I am looking for some advice on finding an accurate air rifle out to 20 yds . I have tried a few (gamo ) and cannot get better than a four inch group. This is from a rest. I am a long time 22 bullseye shooter so I think I know what I am doing. Price range up to $500 ish.

Could you define what you would consider as "accurate". Are you using the artillery hold? Spring pistons work better when allowed to do their own thing.

Try Benjamin Discovery, you will get better group. There are more choice for break barrel or under level airgun, these guns need artillery holding as you don't have any experience, could be the reason for the group of gamo.

I bought a used HW 77 that the previous owner did some basic tuning too
And it shoots dime sized groups at 20 yards with JSB pellets and a peep sight.
Paid less then $500.

Look for a FEINWERKBAU 603, they are recoilless and put all pellets in the same 1/4" grouping at 33 feet, which is the official Air rifle shooting target distance in the standing position.
Look at the international air rifle competition on U-tube and see it done right.

I guess it depends on how much you are willing to spend. The last little project I put together is good for dime sized groups at 25 yards and it's just a pumper.

buy a 1322 ($79)
Steel Breech ($50)
Longer barrel ($25)
Crosman stock ($15)
Crosman 4x scope ($20)

if your really adventurous and own a chrony get a flat top piston kit. Tune it to shoot just right. That little darling will dispatch rabbit sized prey easily with accurate and repeatable head shots out to 25 yards. Past that too if your good at reading the wind and understand the ballistic properties of projectiles.

Lots of pumping though. Thank god for those teen years ;)

Mechanically a 603 is far more accurate than that. Whether or not a shooter can achieve that proficiency is the only variable.

Have you tried different pellets, more info is needed. 4" groups at 20yds is very bad. Spring powered air guns require a different technique than powder burners and shooting off a rest alone isn't usually the best one. The artillery hold as mentioned earlier or a derivative of is necessary for accuracy with springers as well at the risk of offending persons on this forum Gamo rifles are pretty junky in the first place and could have manufacturing defects such as burrs at the crown or sloppy or loose construction which will affect accuracy. If your using a cheap scope a springers double recoil can cause the lenses to become loose affecting accuracy.

I'm a fan of Diana rifles but any German airgun (HW, Feinwerkbau etc.) should do the trick.
Also get decent pellets. Not the ones at CT or Walmart :)

No fun shooting a gun that shoots all over the place.
I currently have two Diana's that I bought used (but in near new condition) for around the $200 mark so you should for sure be able to find a decent one within your $500 budget.

Diana or HW rifles. Your practically garunteed a shooter with one of those. Chinese or Spanish , you can get a shooter but with their QC it's more like 1 in 3 may be a shooter.
I've got an HW 97 that shoots dime groups at 30 and on a good day 40 yards. 2 Diana break barrels here not far behind that. Worth the extra price.
And as mentioned above, try various quality pellets, holds, and you need a springer-rated scope to handle the double recoil. These are a different animal from powder burners. Your previous accomplishments may not entirely apply here. And there's a bit of a learning curve.

using a .177 Diana 48, rws 1 piece mount & a Bushnell 3200 3x9.
very accurate & powerful but it doesn't like shooting from a rest either.
groups open up for some reason..shooting with very little pressure/restrictions
(artillery hold) is the way to go.
also, don't change brands or pellet weights once you find one that works.
doing so will seriously change your point of impact

You live close to me.I will let you try my HW80, and see how well it shoots for yourself.I live near a homemade shooting range about 10 minutes from my house in Bowser.

Did you find one? I shoot an old Fwb 300 that shoots inside a dime at 30 yards. Any side lever feinwerkbau will meet your needs

Go DAINA
But take the time to experiment with different pellets. Even match pellets have a large variance in pellet weight . I have a daina 48/52 and was very. disappointed in its accuracy. I took the time to experiment with at least 7 different types /brands and found round nose and wad cutter pellets were the most accurate (and cheapest). I believe it was because the pellets had more material to contact the lands and groves in the barrel. End result went from a plate sized group at 30 yards to quarter sized group by changing the pellet .
my 2 cents

I have an old Weihrauch HW80 and at 35 yards it can hit dimes all day with H&N 18.5 g pellets. Just have to learn how to hold it as it will knock out your teeth fillings if you hold it tight. Lol

Artillery hold is a must with a springer, the new guns with nitro pistons should be a good choice

I have a Benjamin PCP Marauder .25 (but I think it would be more than 500$ now). This thing is so ridiculously precise that I do not really enjoy it since there is not challenge whatsoever. But when I need to eliminate a critter, nothing cannot be touched within 50 yards. Dime group at 25 yards for me is very common with it.

I saw many nice groups at 100 yards with that thing as well, but never done those personally. This is an AWESOME platform.

PCP guns are cute till you start figuring out the costs. A bicycle pump is very time consuming, a lot of work for a dozen shots. Then price compressors and auxiliary tanks etc( need a scuba licence here to fill a tank). It’s a deep and costly rabbit hole.
