Looking to get into the sport, prefer doing my hunting on foot so want something fairly light.

I have a 12g Supernova pump, but I think I want a 20g.

I really cant afford to spend the $$ on an o/u, so I will probably stick with a pump.

Any suggestions on a good grouse hunting shotgun that will be light, lower in cost, but dependable?

thanks!

Ive used 12g, 20g, and .22 rifles for grouse. They are easy to take down. You will have more accuracy with a longer barrel, but it will add weight.
If I was in your shoes, I would stick with the Benelli you already have... or use it as an excuse to grab a 20g.
I have a 20" pump 20g that is light and works great. Usually grab it if im walking any distance.
edit - I use a Winchester 1300 in the 20g, with Hogue stocks.

These new Turkish-made semis are under 6 pounds in a 20 gauge and not too bad for price. Weatherby and Mossberg each have a model. A 20 ga. Express is cheap and handy but not 'light' but at least lighter. Same for a Mossberg 20 pump. They'll all do the job as a starter grouse gun.

I was thinking of going with the Mossberg 500, seems like a safe, affordable choice. I really liked the look of the "classic" field, but I could only find it in 12g. looks sharp.

Ive used a Mossberg 510 bantam in 20g. Its the youth version, comes with spacers. I bought it for the wife and I used it a dozen times. Pretty handy and lighter.

I am going grouse hunting tomorrow .... and I will be walking and scouting all day on foot.

I have several shotguns available here .... 12ga SxS, 870s, etc. .... but the gun that I always come back to for those days ... is a simple trusted single shot shotgun ... mine is an H&R 12ga.

It is lightweight and I can carry it all day .... it was cheap (CAD $200.-) ... it goes bang every time ... and I don't feel bad if it gets scratched, dinged, or shows some rust ....

How long of a barrel is on your supernova and does it come with chokes? My go to grouse 12g are a 20” fabarm pump and my 20” 870 express, both have a mod choke. By choking th barrel allows you to shoot with a med length barrel, if your supernova is choked I’d use what you already have. Hell I use a choked 14” barrel and it’s deadly on the wild chickens.

And I use my dads a much earlier model with the beaver tail. That 20 gauge has accounted for a lot of grouse dinners with grape jelly.

I bought a few chokes with the supernova. It was the cabelas waterfowl edition so it came with extended chokes. Which I wasn’t interested in for upland. I would love to get my hands on a wingmaster 20g. But I can’t pay $1000. Hoping to find a used one.

I bought a used BPS a couple weeks ago in 20ga. 26" bbl with fixed IC choke. Price was very reasonable and will make a great upland gun for beating around the alders. I like it and would suggest you look for something similar. If you buy a used gun, you will get a lot more value than what you would get new.

Don't fret too much over choke tubes. Any SK or IC fixed choke will work fine for upland, esp flying birds.

Go find a good used Remington WingMaster in the EE you will not look back.

My thoughts but close to yours, I have a 1971 made M37 Ithaca Featherlight 2 3/4 chamber. Between this one and a 1980s O/U SKB also in 20 gauge, I have harvested literally hundreds of rabbits and dozens of grouse with these two very fine bird guns. I look to an older Wingmaster in any gauge as thier equal in regards to fine quality virtually trouble free field service.
