Picked up a Ruger Hawkeye today in the ever boring but "can't go wrong" caliber known as .30-06 Springfield!!:D Pretty nice rifle after first impressions. It definitley has an improved trigger compared to the Ruger All Weather Stainless i used last year. The forestock also seems slimmer almost Remington Mountain rifle like. I will ring some handloads through her tomorrow with my new Chrony in tow and see how she fares.

OMG, first it was guide guns, now it is Ruger Hawkeye's. The new flavour of the month.
So next month we should expect a few in the EE?

If I'm serious about keeping a rifle, I get it bedded, floated and the trigger done before any shooting happens.

............but what if it shoots great right off the bat without bedding and free floating?? I have had many that shot under an inch without that. And with the correct amount of bedliner, bedding and free floating shouldn't be required.:D
 
Nice rifle Mark! I thought you might have gone with the .308win. I think you'll be happy with it - but then again, you are a Gunnut and you've been known to flip a gun or two on here.

I am curious to see how your Hawkeye shoots. My stainless Hawkeye in .358win shot a 1" group right after sighting in the scope.:D

Under an inch is not really "great," more like average ! shooting into the .4's is good and into the .3's is great, and less than that, well..that's another forum....

yeesh, its a bolt action hunting rifle, not a tactical rig

1" groups is great for a factory hunting rifle, anything less is gravy

my point is, for hunting anything bigger than a coyote, consistent 1 moa accuracy is more than accurate enough. A factory rifle that hasnt been modified beyond trigger adjustment and bedding the action, that will consistently shoot MOA, is a good one.

We all like small groups, they're nice to look at. But a gun that will shoot 1" groups will kill just as many critters as one that shoots in the .3s, simple as that

........My .257 Weatherby shoots under a 1/2" like clock work. But tight itty bitty groups don't overly impress me. Especially when done in a clamped down rest. The kind of performance you aspire to reach in a hunting rig is a waste of time. You post your pics this fall and i'll post mine. As hunters, if we do our part using a rifle whether it be a 1" shooter or 1/8" shooter, we will both still end up with a dead animal at quittin time. The only difference will be mine will come with less fussing, experimentation and expense. Some of you guys are way too anal when it comes to accuracy. When the leaves fall , i am hunting. I am not in a shooting competition.
 
For a hunting rifle, I'll take a consistantly reliable rifle, using consistently reliable ammunition, that consistently groups around an inch with a good hunting bullet, any day.
