Who Does Salt Annealing?

found that the cost of flying the chemicals in was on the expensive side due to the dangerous goods ripoff that everyone associated with transportation makes hay with these days.

What chemicals? The salt isn't TDG regulated....just wondering, or have I mis-read?

It looks like it is, from the website:
Due to Transport of Dangerous Goods regulations any one shipment is limited to 1kg (3 jars) maximum of salt. Orders containing salt may not ship via air.

Where are you guys ordering your setups?

Ballisticrecreations.ca

go to your local big box building supply, ie - home depot, look for powdered stump remover, look for the proper chemicals, no additives. Bob's your uncle.

I've only used my setup once so far but annealed everything from 6 PPC to 577 snider. Worked great, just need to adjust the depth of the brass immersion differently for each caliber. Easy enough to do by cutting down a pistol case to the right length to use as a spacer on the plate. Being a rather paranoid individual I placed the Lee melting pot in a large metal tray on my bench so no molten salt would drip onto my wooden bench top. Likely unnecessary but made me feel better.
I expected the 6 PPC CASES to anneal very quickly due to small case and very thin neck but they actually took longer to anneal than the .308 cases.
Setup from Ballistic recreations, great place to deal with, fast replies for questions and fast shipping. I had my own PID setup for my lead pot so didn't need their meter.

Look great. I checked out his site. Does anyone know if the standard cardriges can be done with the large holder. Could save having to buy 2 holders.

I use the salt from Ballistic Recreations with my own cartridge holder and a PID controlled Lee 10lb pot. Very happy with results.

I do notice the salt level go down when doing large batches of rifle brass. I wish I could find a local resupply source.

Probably need to raise the bottom of the holder and the case wouldn't be strait (doing 223 in a 50 bmg hole....)

So at the risk of asking some dumb questions. How much drag out do you guys get with this setup? If you plan to anneal 200 pieces of brass, do you need to top up somewhere along the way? how easy is it to use the setup for different calibers(one caliber per session)? I've got 308, 300wm, 338LM and 223 to think about, and that cut shell idea, I'm not sure how easy/realistic/pain in the ass that solution is.

The instructions from Ballistic Recreation covers the setup / settings well - temperature as well as timing. I found an app for my iPhone that makes a "tic-toc" sound like a metronome - 5 seconds per case, just like the instructions say. He also has a video on his website showing how he can handle two cases in sequence - I am too klutzy to have mastered that yet - I just dip and soak for 5 "tics", one case at a time. I did buy a second jar of the salts on my initial order - I find that there is a drop or so that comes out with each case - dissolves in the water bucket of course, but occasionally I need to add a "cc" or so to top up the level of the melted salt - never had to do that in mid-session of 100 cases, though.

Timing isn't that critical, the brass can't get hotter than the bath. I tried a timer app on my iPhone but in practice once I get a good double shuffle going it's about right. I watch the blue line and if I start getting ahead of the heat I'll give the next one a little pause to get back in sync.
