What to chamber the Oberndorf in?

Many great points and thoughts all around, 9.3 thank you! I’ll open that link soon just about to take off, looks like a source for a proper .318 barrel. Would be wonderful and a heavy front runner for this one, for me.

I’m not worried about action work to make a belted Magnum feed, it’s something I enjoy and kills the long winter evenings in bush camp better than TV does. No magic to it just time and slow methodical changes, and the H&H is an all time classic in an M98 so happy with the magazine mods required. In fact it feeds better in a well tuned M98 than most original M98 chamberings with its long, highly tapered case. 7 Mag would be more problematic but totally workable as well, I’ll be frank and say I’ll never do the 7 Mag on a classic M98 just put it up as it’s sensible, fails to make my heart jump though.

On range, peeps work swell for me to 300+, they’re no more limited than the small scopes I’d put on a light rifle, except at very last light. Heck we shoot peeps, albeit match ones, at 1,000 on our range, hunting ranges are not a concern and can still make full and proper use of a .270 without glass.

.303 dogfish is a major pain in an M98 and offers no benefits to my eyes, had a nice WW Greener M98 .303 and sold it, I’d hate to try and replicate that magazine arrangement. The .303 belongs in a falling block. Barrel and stock aren’t for sale unfortunately and you’d hate the price I’d place on that worn out .30-06 barrel.

I chose 275 rigby for class and history. A wonderful cartridge with a colorful and widespread acceptance anywhere in the world. Youre skill in stock making and ability to find extraordinary blanks just suits a 275 rigby. Plus its on my list to own as well.
458 wm is one of my fav cartridges but in a light gun with nice wood id fear the mauser cracked tang as youd most likely encounter extreme moisture or dry heat where it would be used. West coast or africa

Another choice would be the 375 rimless nitro. Basically a 375 hh short and gets the performance of the 9.3x57 without being a 9.3.
A slim trim 375 rimless nitro with a quarter rib would be nice and handy. A good match for a 7x57 you already got

Like your points all around, I just did a .375 2 1/4 Nitro / 9.5x57 last year unfortunately on a Titanium Satterlee build as was really underwhelmed, not a potato gun fan, want bullets meeting the animal over 2,500fps on impact. Have noted a significant cutoff in shock effect around there outfitting, have become a moderate speed fan. Except for .458 as it’s just too classic,

My three choices in this order, proper Mauser sporter cartridges

1st - 318 Westley Richards
2nd - 375 H&H
3rd - 275 Rigby

No 6.5s, .30s, 8mms, or 9.3s as I have those bases more than covered and don’t want to stock new bullet diameters- except for a .318. .404 is a fine point 8x68, and jimmyjazz like your style.

Is there a more practical do-all cartridge than a fast twist 280 Ackley?

Probably hard to pick one. Just never warmed up to feeding it, and not as slick to cycle as the boring version and .270.
