What's in your pack?

Specifically, if you're camping in your truck ect, what do you carry on you during the day? I always end up with too much crap that never gets used. I think my big problem is over packing while thinking about what I might need if I can't get back to the truck and have to spend the night in the woods, then I carry 20+lbs of crap that never gets used...

So what do you pack on day trips where you plan to return to the truck after shooting light is over?

My day pack has everything I need for a day out plus if I get stranded I’m good for an overnight or two, I’ve been trying to get it down the the bare minimum and it’s around 9.5-10lbs with an empty 2L water bladder and food/snacks. I haven’t bothered to weigh it with water as I don’t really want to know lol. While I’m not hiking I have my ammo, binos, gloves and Howard Leights in it and rain gear is strapped to it if there’s a chance the weather is crappy. This is what’s in it though while I’m hiking.

GPS, compass, hunting tags, toilet paper, small first aid kit, water purification drops, silver emergency blanket, tiny bivy sac, lighter and fire starter tin, a couple plastic bags, three piece cleaning kit and brushes, sitting pad (hd foam, 6”x8”) spare aa & aaa batteries, headlamp, rangefinder, field dressing kit (small knife, small hand saw and a sharping steel), twist ties, nitrile gloves, lens cleaner wet naps, 15-20’ of paracord, 10-15’ of thicker rope for a drag line, Mora knive, fingerless wool gloves, Shemagh/scarf, choke wrench, shooting glasses.

Sometimes I’m close to home, sometimes I’m further out. A lot of the time I don’t have cell service so I’d rather be prepared if I get stranded out overnight and can’t get back to the truck for some reason. I always tell my wife what areas I’m heading to.
 
My day pack gets divided into a couple different kits that i could loose if I thought it wasn't necessary, but they all seem to stay in my day pack.
I add appropriate extra clothes as dictated by time of year.
I could quiet comfortable survive out of the pack for a few days if need be.
It does seem like a lot all written out but it actually packs down to be pretty small.
I also have some EDC stuff on me at all times like a small flashlight my larger knife etc.

One of my handmade sheath knives, spyderco centophante, leatherman wave, 2 litre water bag, ferro rod, 2 glow sticks, surefire E2L, 4 eat more bars, 10 extra rounds for whichever rifle I am carrying, and an arcteryx atom light jacket.
 
Ok, I give it a try .... What would I really need to "survive" one or two nights in the woods?

- I always carry a knife on me, so I am covered there.
- And I always carry one of those tiny (1 AAA) flashlight on me ... very handy when it gets dark.
- Being able to make a fire is the most important thing for me ... and being able to make a fire when it rains and everything is wet. So I carry a fire steel and 2 -3 fire starters at least.
- Next comes water: I might not actually carry something to drink, but I will always have some sort of means to purify water with me. For me that means either a stainless bottle ... and that I can use to boil water over a fire ... or a foldable/rollable 1 Liter pouch with a couple of purification tablets.
- Shelter: I don't care too much about shelter ... I can find shelter under a nice tree ... under a rock ... etc. ... but I need a big fire to stay warm during the night. So, I carry something for wood processing ... something like a tomahawk or a fordable saw.
- I carry a bare minimum first aid kit, ... disinfectant and medical tape. Thats it!
- I probably have a compass on me just in case ...
- I carry some cordage ... like para-cord with me ... making cordage out of plants is a pain ... so, for the immediate need, I carry some para-cord.
- I carry a pair of sturdy leather working gloves ... Making big fires that keep you warm is lots of work ... my hands thank me every time ... :)
- I carry of course ammunition for the day
- And I carry an oiled rag and some oil to maintain my firearm in case of rain, etc.

Voila, that is basically my bare minimum ....

If I am out on a day trip ...
- I carry food for the day
- I carry something to drink for the day
- I carry a rain jacket/poncho
- And if I am anticipating a very heavy hike/climb ... a spare t-shirt and shirt to be able to change ... I am just sweating too much ...

I think I've finally got my kit dialed in for everything from a quick hike to an all day hunt. Haven't done any overnights yet but I would like to.

In bino harness-
Binos, benchmade griptilian, para cord, tags, predator call, chapstick, compass, spare mag or 3-4 spare rounds, bandana, lens wipes, bic wrapped in flagging tape.

In daypack- 1l nalgene, kill kit with knife, game bags, 1 large contractor bag, zip ties, 1 large freezer bag, nitrile gloves.

Mess kit- msr pocket rocket, 1 can fuel, 1 cook pot that fits over nalgene, Starbucks via, sugar, water flavoring, cliff bars, sometimes some ramen, titanium spork, sawyer squeeze filter and one bag for it.

I also keep a misc bag with gps, gloves, buff, first aid/survival kit and a packable down jacket. Theres always a leatherman wave on my hip as well.

I also have a life that goes over my pack that will hold my compact spotting scope and small tripod as well as my phoneskoping stuff. I don't always take this but usually miss it when I don't.

My total pack weight is around 20lbs. Its a good quality pack that has a load shelf in case I need to pack meat out. (Mystery ranch) it seems like a lot to carry but I like to be prepared.

Last time it’s was a cooler full of beer and snacks, 6 pairs of pro mark shira kashi oak sticks, Tama swing star 6 piece drum set with a rack, and a sleeping bag. But it was more of a music festival survival situation.

It's a solid addition to the pack. If you chafe - Penatin will help.. Plus it can be used as a super thick sun block.
