thinking of getting wife a gun for christmas

first off she has her R-pal.
long story short she had a baby so she hasn't gone shooting for a while.

now for the worst part.... she doesn't own a gun.

i have a mossberg in 12ga she's not a fan of.
i was thinking something like a bps in 20ga
would be a bit less intimidating as far as recoil goes.

want her to have a good go to gun.

just looking for opinions and thinking out loud.
 
I would drop by Dels or Canadian Tire with here under the “Oh hey I just need to stop in here real quick.” excuse and once you get her inside surprise her and tell her you’re buying her a gun, then let her pick one out that she likes and that fits her.
 
Jay smith, you say that your wife is not a fan of your Mossberg and that should raise a warning flag for you! Suggest some different guns for her and have her handle them to see if they fit but in the end, let her decide what she wants!
In my experience, I don't think women like pump guns much, not saying they are all that way but I see lots of women shooting over and under's and semi's but hardly ever a pump gun. One female friend of mine tried a BPS on the trap line for awhile and although she shot it quite well, she just fought with the action, got frustrated and eventually got rid of it and went with an over and under. I'd steer her toward a gas operated semi in 12 gauge but make sure it will handle light target loads as well as heavier hunting loads if she's going to hunt with it.
 
If she has her rpal why not get her a nice 22 pistol? Or maybe a NR 9mm carbine
I'm sure she would enjoy something like that as compared to a mule kicking 12 guage
 
Any lady I have helped get into shotguns ended up with a semi eventually so IMo I would not be looking at pumps
BPS 20ga still has a fair kick to it and they don't fit most well so try before you buy

Thoughts on the Bowning Citori Micro Midis in 12 gauge. You could always load down with an over under but if you really want a pump the BPS Micro Midis in 20 is a pretty solid choice. I just got my wife a Bearcat for Christmas but she found the gun so I have to surprize her with something else. I just finished a build for my son but I think I have enough time to do another AR build to surprize my wife.

thanks everyone. truthfully the replies have steered me away from the bps idea. i didn't know some women aren't fans of pump actions. i do know she really likes bolt actions and her favorite caliber is .22.
i know it sounds silly me knowing that and wanting to get her a shotgun. i just feel they are a good honest gun but maybe its not best to start with one. also she has no idea im thinking of getting her a gun we dont spend alot on each other for Christmas i just want to get her something nice.
maybe i should be asking what's a dern nice first gun.

My mother was not impressed when I bought my wife a citori superlight 20 gauge and a horse before I bought her a engagement ring in 1984. We are still married and she says as long as she doesn't have the feed it or clean up after it I can buy it. Make sure the gun is stocked for her not you before she gets it so there is no misunderstanding as to your motives.

good question. I am thinking a .22 may be a better first gun for me to buy her. my original thinking was that she likes shooting my 10 22 but not my shotgun.
was thinking id get her more variety.
in all honesty neither of us do a lot of shooting.
though we both enjoy it when we go.
