Getting sighted in

I was sighting in a few rifles today for deer season with the good old leadsled and started out at 25 yards got all the guns shooting bullseyes at 25 then moved out to 100 yards and every gun was 6 to 7 inches high at 100 yards I finally got them zeroed in at 100 but never had that problem before usually if I shoot at 25 I’m not far off at 100 anyone have a idea why so high at 100

Usually, I will take a quick and dirty measurement of the distance between the centreline of my barrel and centreline of my optic (distance over bore), and sight in at 25 with it point of impact that same measurement low of point of aim (sort of like a rough boresight). At twenty five I want the shot to be close for windage (vertically on center) and to match distance over bore.

Everyone has there own way but for me it works and is just as fast as a laser or optical boresight (I have both sitting on a shelf somewhere here).

I never bother shooting at 25 yards, a waste of ammunition. And if you use a lead sled with weight on it, the point of impact can be affected.

Check out the ballistics of the cartridge used and I think you will find if you zero @ 25, you will be higher @ 100. Your trajectory crosses your line of sight twice, kind of like two points that are zero, one up closer, and one closer to 100. Sierra V6 is a fair program and available for free if you dig for it. Lead sleds can indeed affect performance. Another poster suggested an inch or two low at 25, sounds realistic as well. Have fun shooting.

Really I didn’t know that is it because of the weight? So I should take the weight off for my final shot to make sure it’s still shooting the same

^^^^ I agree ^^^^
How many rounds did you fire with each rifle to get sighted in?
I have stopped counting the number of people I have told "Your rifle can be sighted in for 200 y or m in three shots".
It is almost the same number as those who don't believe me.
Have yet to see some one packing a lead sled while hunting.

I abhor lead sleds. They are definitely not the best way to sight in a rifle.
Additionally, I know of two wood stocks that broke in the wrist area when in a lead sled.
I agree with the 1" low at 25, if you use that method to begin your sight in.

I then shoot a 3 shot group at 100, and adjust the scope crosshairs to match the
impact center, while holding the rifle motionless. Then I shoot at 1, 2 and 300 M to
verify POI. Finally I will shoot several groups from field positions to make sure of POI.

Well I used 2 shots each gun for 25 then probably 6 or 8 at 100. So how do you sight in for 200 yards in 3 shots?
So I like shooting with the lead sled and every other year works great but I was just having this issue this year but you guys are thinking it’s the led sled making the mistake? So should I go re shoot or should it be good if it’s alright I did shoot the guns that was going to be using for deer this year free hand at 100 yards and they were all good

After your sighted in at 100 yards , go back and shot at 25 yards just to see were your shot is . Ditch the lead sled !

The reason it never happened before is just a fluke. The bullet should be low at 25yds. Your line of site is higher than your line of fire. If the bullet was bang on at 25yds you will be way to high at 100 yds.

I always bore sight by putting the rifle on something sturdy and solid, remove the bolt and align the target in the middle of bore by looking through the action.
Once the target is centered in the bore I adjust my scope so the crosshairs are also centered on the target.
Works every time and saves ammo.

Well, if you are shooting some snowball speed factory ammo in a already mild cartridge and were trying for 3 inches high or so at 100 to get you out to 250ish, bang-on at 25 yards would be within the realm of possibility. Or if you are using iron sights and trying for a 100 yard zero 25 yards would be close.

If your scope is 1.5" above your bore, the bullet has come up 1.5" in 25 yds provided your bang on at that range, then it would be 1.5" high at 50 yds and 4.5" at 100yds. If you were slightly high at 25 yds then you could be 6" high at 100yds. Like Dogleg already stated, it depends on the cartridge and how high you want it to impact at 100 yds. Most high powered rifle's are pretty flat out to 100 yds unless your shooting a 45-70.

I was shooting a 270win 308win 30-06win and 300wsm and I did bore sight them in first then brought them to probably about a inch high at 25 yards then was like 6 inches high at 100 yards so what you guys are saying is start low at 25 yards so your a bit high at 100 yards? So as of right now I sighted all my guns in at 1 inch high at 100 yards so I should be all good for deer season I was just worried that I might be really low at 25 yards now if a deer came in close
Thanks for all the reapplies I know have a better understanding and hope to use less bullets when sighting in the rifles
Thanks

If you can hit the paper at 100, there's no need to shoot at 25 or otherwise close at all, unless you want to be aware of the little subtleties needed to able to head shoot swimming beavers (or crocodiles) at close range, or behead a grouse with your deer rifle or in some places send a snake to the big snake pit in the sky.

Here's the skinny on the 3 shot sight in. Shoot one shot at 25-30 yards. Observe where the bullet hole is in the target.
Holding the rifle steady [it cannot move] starting with the crosshairs where they WERE when you fired the shot, adjust
the scope crosshairs to the bullet hole in the target, and then down about ¾ - 1 inch below it.

Now fire a shot at 100 yards or meters, being sure you have a solid, steady rest, and repeat the scope adjustment as
you did at close range. You should now be at Point of aim at 100. You can decide your elevation at this time and adjust
the scope accordingly. [say - 2" high at 100...move crosshairs down below bullet hole by 2"] Now fire one shot to verify.
You are now ready to go at 100, and probably at 200 as well. For assurance, another shot, this one at 200 will offer proof.
