Thaugts on Remington 700 all models

Thoughts on the Remington 700 ? as in ?

Fit and finish ?

Accuracy ?

Options ?

Trigger ?

I have bought and sold dozens of them, built custom rifles on some of the actions mostly older model actions, great rifles all in all, late models seem to not be as well made as earlier models.
only about 7.5 million of them built and sold to date so can't be all bad !

Would have to be a pretty good deal to entice me to buy one.
There are better options for new rifles at that price point.

I like them. They fit me well and are not hard to reload for. I do like the Timney trigger in them though

The Remington 700 is one of my favourite designs, I've had very few issues with them ranging from 80's era to present era.
If for some reason I could have only one bolt action it would be a 700 .308.

Having said that ..

- The X-Mark Pro trigger sucks, period, end of story.
- The SPS series finish is a BUDGET finish, not for me.
- The SPS series stocks are a budget stock, not for me.

So, if you're going to purchase new Remington 700 (any model) IMO you gotta change the trigger.....which pisses me off.
The SPS finish might be just fine for many but for me it's gotta be cerakoted. If I really like the model and it shoots really well then it's worth it to me.
As for the SPS stock it might be just fine for many as well but I don't like them. Th only SPS series I have like the rifle very much so swapped it into a used HS Precision. Again, it was worth it to me in this case.

Additionally, some of the new CDL's I've seen are top notch... except for that bad trigger (IMO).

I highly recommend some of the older used 700's on the E&E with the older Walker trigger. Some great rifles come up from time to time.

Only issue I've had with the 700 was a couple of 223 rifles and both of them the bolt would ride over the rounds without picking one up to chamber it. Sold them both.

Anything in a 308 based cartridge has worked perfectly fine for me.

sorry can not chime in but whenever i purchased a new rifle it wasn't a remy

Great contribution to the thread.

I have 2 700s and both are quite accurate. One is a 5R milspec in 223, the other a 243 varmint model. Finish is good on the 5r, so so on the varmint. I have replaced both triggers and the stock on the varmint. I like them and would buy more but would want to handle them first.

All that said, my money will go to tikka next time.

I have been buying and using Remington 700 rifles since their release in the very early 60's. Prior to that it was 721s and 722s.
If copying is the most sincere form of flattery, the 700 is a winner. Many aftermarket actions copy the 700 platform.

In all fairness, there have been some poorly finished/fitted 700 in more recent years, but overall, they are one of the very best
actions out there.
Despite a few naysayers, the 700 is still the go-to rifle for several million hunters and shooters. Speaks for itself, I believe. Dave.

They are great hunting rifles, no problems with them at all, but I still prefer the feel and fit of my Winchesters, and Browning rifles.

Ford, Chev, Dodge. Take your pick. Some like Winchester, some like Browning, and others like Remington. All make good guns. I'm a Remington fan. That said, I prefer the Walker trigger to the X-Mark Pro POS. I prefer deep bluing to the SPS line. I Never liked the "blockiness" of Browning designs, but they are sure pretty guns. Found Winchesters to be high quality, but heavy with thick dimensions as compared to my 700 Mountain rifle. It's the LSS version. It just fits me so damn well! I prefer the older ones, 70, 80, and 90's vintage. Quality control was better then. Still, newer ones are still accurate out of the box.

Oddly enough I had 2 Xmark pro triggers I sent in for the recall, had already replaced with Timney, what I got back were 2 excellent trigger packs, very light and crisp with no overtavel, both serving in target rigs still today.
The Xmark are easy to adjust, what's hard is getting all the lawyer proof glue/wax whatever they coat all the adjustment screws with off. Best left to a gunsmith for sure, but they can be made useable.

I couldn't agree more.

I've owned half a dozen Remingtons all with the walker style trigger. All have been great rifles. All have been shot to the point of being rebarrelled. Accuracy was great with all except an SPS SS in 270 which was just so so. Never had any issues I can remember. I do prefer the ergonomics of a Winchester M70 but the Winnie tends to be a heavier rifle.

I've had good luck with the two I've owned. In fact my new 6.5 creedmoor barreled action shot a .562" group @ 100m on its third 5 shot group ever using factory Hornady 140gr ELD-M's.

That's certainly good enough for me.
