March 15-April 15 2019. Me, my 16 YO son and one or two good friends. Going to do a bunch of fishing and hunting. First week in the north will be fishing for kings and snapper. Then hunting pigs and goats with a guide. After that going to the South Island for mountain game and fly fishing. Hoping to go unguided for this second leg of the trip.

Anyone who has advice on what to do or pitfalls to avoid I welcome all of it. Especially great public land hunting spots.

Well AHOY there!
i heard the whispers down the valley an thoght i would pop in here!

the title drew me in anyway, New Zealand!!!

A month in some amazing country will be a trip well worthy of a Unguided DIY public land hunt for a Red stag or perhaps some Tahr and Cham in the southern Alps..

Im not toooo specialised in New Zealand however by March i might be!

im actually moving over this month for a good stint of Working, living and Hunting!

shoot me a PM closer to your date and will see where i am in the southern hemisphere!!

with the NZ come the ROAR period of march april alot of the Busy spots now get Balloted out to share the load between hunters an not having 50 hunters in the one valley..

alot of area is not Balloted but it will pay to investigate prior to arrival.
search google for fishhuntnz forum and ask a few Q, the lads are fairly good to internationals with giving limited info regarding things outside of Spots and good spots ;)

and Oi- cheers for the kind words Peks and lookybro!
:)

The North Island has some excellent fishing as well. Lake Taupo is very well known but there are others. The Rainbow were steelhead imported from the Russian River and there are massive brown trout as well. You will find the mountains less rugged than ours and the trails are decent. Some excellent walks with huts along the way. My BIL lives in Karameos and there is a walk which starts there and ends up in Golden Bay which a tourist centre because it is so incredible. Excellent food and not a lot of people make it a pretty neat place to visit. Not a big place so easy drives to wherever you are headed. Money jumps around so pay attention and you might do OK on the exchange. Have a ball. We are heading down in 2020 to visit wife's family, can't wait.

Sounds like the trip of a lifetime. I hope you post up some pics afterward. Good luck!

CGN really needs a "Hunt Reports" forum to encourage guys to share stories about their adventures.

Well I am in new Zealand right now, and will likely be back again in March/ April for the same reasons as you guys, fishing and hunting. Ive just come back from thar hunting trip, that was abandoned, due to extreme river flooding, and major southern artic storm, that is hammering the south island, with snow to 200m, Welcome to spring. three weeks of #### weather.

King fish and snapper, I recommend epic charters in Tirau,

Nz hunting is different than Canada, animals can be hunted all year round, with no limits and limited rules, You will have to put sum degree of effort in, I recommend the east coast central Canterbury for mountain game, Thar and chamois, red deer. the McCauley is a good option, as is the likes of the Godley river, Dobson, I would contact Doc (department of conservation) Twizel, for up to date info, there is currently a major campaign to cull 30-80% of the Thar, so may be tough if your in a hammered area. you will also need a hunting perit from DOC, this is free and can be done online before you go.
NZ police will issue you with a one year firearm licance when you pick up rifles at Auckland airport, think this cost $30 NZ, so make sue you have sum cash.

Closer you are to the main range,(southern alps) the more Thar, High Thar numbers, will tend to push out chamois, and red deer will need access to bush and scrub so limited, deer in good Thar areas.
There is a serious of Spot X books aviable here in NZ, that are hunting and fishing guides, with access info/ animal's, tips, hut info, track info and land owner contats etc, I recommend your purchases the hunting and freshwater one, this will help you plan and decide, what areas to fish and hunt self guided. , I purchess, 1-50000 grid maps, of my intending hunting area, and plan finial activities from there.
NZ weather is much more fickle, that what you are used to, pay attention to conditions, take quality wet weather gear, and be prepared to sit and wait out poor conditions, and flooded creeks and river, hunters and hikers die every year, for failing to do so.

Any further questions I happy answer if I can.
If your driving down south, be sure to stop in Levin and check out the swazi outdoor line of clothing, sum of the best in the world, and good place to pick up end of line and seconds at a great price, much of the American line clothing, is not as quite in the bush and as durable in extreme wet.

For self guided, Twizel/ Tekapo are a very good option, for both freshwater and hunting, thousands of rabbits as well as deer, Thar, chamois and pigs with in a 50km radius. Tekapo Hellicopers might be worth contacting, and booking a trip in if you have limited time, or no access to a 4x4. This is a busy time for hunting so booking a flight in may be wise.
good hunting on the west coast, but much steep and harder country. Be prepared to shoot to 400m for NZ Mountain game, often across gully shots.
regards Southernman.

Don't think hunting is a culture in New Zealand. People hardly own firearms.

As far as I know, there are so many places people go hiking, camping etc and it's not a big country, I would say better to get a local guide if you want to use any firearm there to avoid accident. Australia might be a better option for hunting.

Hunting is a religion in New Zealand
Sure its only a small country compared to Canada but there are still only 4.5 million people
Firearms ownership is actually relatively high and a lot of people still live and work on the land.

All of my family in NZ hunt! Find a farmer in a pub and ask him if he needs help eradicating rabbits and possum! Ever hunted at night, in the back of a truck, with suppressors, and spotlights.....LEGALLY! There was originally only 2 species of bat in NZ....all other mammals were introduced and have no predators, thus the open season on all animals. Check out NZ hunting on youtube!

I doubt the religion is in any major cities in New Zealand which covers the majority of the populations there. Farmers may own rifles for predators and protection purposes, but most of people I know don't even consider to own firearms, too much hassle, way less than in here. And less crime and you can not use it for self defense at home. Shooting range is far driving distance to cities and police don't even carry firearms.
