Carrying a firearm on a tractor

I thought that perhaps other ag people might be similar to me in that I carry a firearm on my tractor(s) frequently. It was always a challenge finding a safe secure place for them in the cab that left them available when needed. It only took me a few years to finally think of this idea. When I look at how simple it is I kind of feel dumb.

I purchased a Kolpin gun holder pack for ATV's. One pack outfits two tractors. The picture shows the interior insulation removed but it is not necessary to do that for installation. The holders come with a rubber strap to keep the gun in place but I have found no need to use it. So far the holders have held the firearms perfectly even over rough ground. One hand turned knob removes it if wanted.
Picture shows installation on a JD 4230.

do you find that the scope goes out since cabs on most farm power sources are not air mounted, just the seat (where the suspension all is)? Would iron sites be the norm in this one particular instance?

No problems so far. My eyesight has got to the point where irons are not much of an option anymore. No reason that I couldn't put something for padding under the butt I suppose. This Browning has a rubber butt plate anyways, and the floor does have rubber matting. This rifle is my *everyday* rifle and was purchased for that job. So far it has no damage but by the time I am finished with it then it will likely have some scars. So far the Vortex/Browning combo shoots like a laser.

I am not a big fan of scope covers but because of the dusty environment in a tractor I needed them. I use ordinary electrical tape on the muzzle most of the time but sometimes leave it off. For reasons I do not understand the tape seems to slightly affect accuracy with this particular rifle.

The Kolpin brand rifle holders come with a rubber strap so no need for a jar seal. I was chuckling with my wife, it has been many years since we have heard about jar seals. Not sure if a person could even buy one??

But seriously, I have had this set up for a couple of years and have never found a need to use the rubber strap. Those holders work very well.

(Not well schooled in John Deere models, I Goofled JD 4230.) That seems like a small'ish machine. What kind of field work are you doing with it? And, 2WD or 4WD?

Test it some more... I seriously doubt taping the muzzle causes that first shot to be off...

i like it! that works way better than my "shove it in a corner" method. though sadly i doubt the boss would look kindly on me drilling holes in the cab of the new 6175. i may have to work up a mount to hook onto the gps bracket.

Nah man. 4230 is a decent sized cab tractor. Old school iron and 2wd. In response to the guy asking about the 4230.

Also, good idea with the mount.

New holand was nice enough to have two holes with nuts welded on the bottome side on my fender I'm going to try and mount one of those grips up. Man I wish I had a cab lol.
