New to shooting and looking to get an x39 caliber retail gun to plink with.

Within a decent drive (I want to go in person and get a feel before buy) my main options are:

Robinson Armament xcr-l
csa vz58
soviet sks
norinco m14/m305a
type 81
M+M Industries m10x dmr

How would people rate these if money is not an issue? (1-6)
Also how would you rate if money/value was an issue? (1-6)

I know this is probably a noob question but I'm really looking to get as many opinions as I can and learn along the way.

rate how?
ability to host optics
ergonomics
heavy vs light
reliability
usability of 10 round mags
after market accessories

there are so many factors on how to rate a firearm

Well I was thinking in general, but out of what you are asking: reliability, performance, ergonomics.

If money was no object I'd suggest a pair of latest generation Robinson XCRs, one to shoot, one for spare parts.

Ergonomics wise you can't beat the safety, mag release, bolt release, charging handle setup of the XCR. Plus adjustable gas system, compatibility with a wide range of optics and muzzle devices.

Also, buy a manufacturing plant to produce your own line of match-grade 7.62x39 rounds.

Take the M10x off the list, #### those guys.

If you just want to plink, get an sks and a crate of corrosive. Cheapest way to go.

Robinson Armament XCR-L-$2,805 at FOC - pinned to 5 rounds
M+M Industries M10x DMR-$1,999 at FOC - pinned to 5 rounds
CSA vz 58-$1,499 at Cabela’s Canada - pinned to 5 rounds
Type 81-$999 at Tactical Imports – pinned to 5 rounds
Norinco M305a-$725 at Marstar – pinned to 5 rounds
Soviet SKS-$250-300 - pinned to 5 rounds

This way or the other each of them is only a 5-rd shooter. Is it worth paying $1,000-3,000 for plinking 5 rounds in semi-auto? On top of it, cheap 7.62x39 is corrosive! Does it make sense to shoot corrosive from a carbine worth $1,000-$3,000?

CSA VZ 58 modded = 6, 5
CSA VZ 58 stock = 5, 3

Type 81 modded = 4, 4
Type 81 stock = 6, 5

SKS modded = 5, 6
SKS stock = 3 , 6

Ok, I know for a fact that the XCR can take 10 round pistol mags in 7.62x39 and 223! I have one with both barrels and these mags. Great gun for plinking and deer hunting! I also know that you can get mag adaptors for the sks to allow for 10 round pistol mags.

My choice out of all of them if money were not an issue would be the XCR. if money were an issue, the SKS with the mag adaptor!

For a fun cheap plinker, I always recommend a NR Pistol Caliber Carbine!

If u limit ur range to under 150m, they are the best on pretty much every level!

A good PCC is

Around $1000
Takes 10rnd mags usually
Very ergonomic
Mod friendly
Optic friendly
Good part support
Reliable
Light
Compact
2 MOA accurate
Cheap NON corrosive ammo
Great hunting ammo selection
Easy on the ears
Dont annoy ur neighbour's sound wise as much
Beginner friendly
Doesn't over penetrate targets as easily
Allowed at almost any indoor range
Doesn't destroy fur pelts

And the list goes on I'm sure

So what that you could get a 10-rd mag? It costs additional money to an already substantial price. Still, does it make sense to shoot cheap corrosive plinking ammo from a carbine worth $3,000? Note that the OP wants a semi-auto for plinking not hunting!

Money is an issue:

1) SKS
2) Norinco M305A
3) Norinco Type 81
4) CSA VZ58
5) M+M
6) Robinson Arms

You'll notice that these are listed in order of price - because you can buy a SKS and crate of ammo for the price of the next rifle alone. New shooters - for plinking - should buy inexpensive rifles and lots of ammo IMHO.

If money isn't an issue then.....

1) Robinson Arms
2) CSA VZ58
3) M+M
4) SKS
5) Norinco Type 81
6) Norinco M305A

These are listed by quality, available accessories, and what I can recall for reviews by owners.

I think this about sums it up.

That said, x39 ammo has increased considerably in price, and a lot of indoor ranges won't allow surplus anyway. The aforementioned PCC may be a decent option if you're just looking at plinking out to 100m.

I can tell you I have had them all, and still have some of them. if you are new to the game get yourself a good clean Russian sks with a good bore , and have fun. no scopes no special stocks, no nothing but a clean milspec sks. if you enjoy it and like shooting it, my next step would be M&M or wait for the new one that wolverine is going to build, that one you can scope or whatsever.

Everyone in Canada should have an SKS.... good, reliable, cheap rifle. I've actually given away a few SKSs to friends as a reward/incentive for getting their PALs!

That being said, if I was only going to choose one 7.62x39 gun, it would be a Cz858 (the CSA versions are not nearly of the same quality/reliability as actual Cz guns, in my experience). Given the iffy legal status of the 858 in the next year, probably the type 81 would be my next choice. The XCR-L recent-production guns are excellent, AND can accept 10-rd mags without any modifications, but are a lot more $$.

So SKS, Cz858, Type 81 or XCR. I wouldn't even consider the other options, personally.

Ruger makes the mini-30 in several 5 round options.
They run about $750-1100 USD.

Not sure if they are available in Canada, but a great choice if you can get your hands on one. They are also set up for optics

Decent accuracy too, supposedly. One YouTube e shooter got consistent hits out to 800yards in one video I saw a while back

If you are going to spend $1000 I would get a WK-180.

X39 has been going up in price and it’s not much cheaper than bulk 223 now.

If you want cheap, get a good SKS and stick a peep sight on it to instantly double your accuracy.

Is the CSA VZ58 getting banned??
