Anybody shoot steel long range with their 22s?

I'd say I've been close to buying steel targets over a dozen times...but never have. Centerfire OR rimfire. I'm usually plinking, ammo-testing/scope zeroing..or blasting gophers when budget allows for a trip west. :) But, considering how much I enjoy long-range gophering...I'm wondering how much I might enjoy long-range steel targets. Not as much as gophers I'm sure, but fun to stretch-out the 22s sometimes...

I shoot on farms mostly, and they're not exactly groomed ranges where I can set a target low to the ground and hope to see it 100+ yards away. A round or square "gong" around 6" x 6" is what I'm thinking about, but I'm interested in seeing how you guys hang them...how high they ride off the ground, etc. If I can find an easy to carry/set-up system..I may call-up Range Rabbit in the new year and get something going.

Cabelas sells these cheap ar-500 steel plates of all sizes down to tiny ones. Buy some chain and hang them on posts st various distances for cheap.

Thanks Mike~yeah, I've seen them there. SEEMED expensive, then I looked at a few sites...actually pretty reasonable. I can't really leave the gongs in place on these working farms, but don't want whatever I use to be a chore to lug around/set-up either. I'm sure I can come up with something, whether I buy it..make it..or have it made. Just looking for ideas..
 
AR 500 is pretty uneccessary for 22LR, AR 400 is slightly cheaper and will do a better job but at that distance I shoot mild steel and it stands up just fine. I've got some fun stuff, going to be building more pretty soon! I prefer ground spikes for any stands, nothing ruins steel like dropping the targets. Im going to be building a KYL rack but Im going to emphasize it being easy to pack. I love going out in the bush and setting up steel and running it, not much for packing it out though!

Interesting~I'd like to see what you make. I have underestimated the power of 22LR before though. I had a fabricator make some 12 or 14ga squares for me one time, I drilled them and hung them from chains 90 yards away on my father-in-law's property. I don't remember which gauge it was of the two...but remember CCI SV ammo knocking the s**t out of them. Nearly destroyed, sheared-off the corner of one where the chain was attached and down it went. lol Not comparing thin-ish CRS to AR400, but I may look at AR500 so I can unleash the fury of my 17 Hornet (or .223) if the mood strikes. :)
 
I use 8" square ar500 plate hung by a chain off a steel bar and a triangle frame made of 2x4 spruce. It has a rectangular base. I can ring it out to 400 if no wind. Enough to make me feel proud anyway. 500 i can rarely hit it. Maybe 1 in 50. I do well out to 250 and 300.
My 22mag makes hits much easier. Its fun and challenging
 
I bought some 16 gauge steel and used an angle grinder to cut out a IPSC torso. I've used this target at 100m and out to 400m. My brother holds the record of making 7 hits out of a 10 shot mag at 400m. Great fun. Some dimpling in the steel at 100m, no major damage.
 
You'll enjoy it. I have a square 6" plate and a round 4" that I hang at 100 yards to shoot with my old BSA 12/15, aperture sights. Very satisfying. I've tried different colours of spray paint, ended up preferring white.
 
I have a 8 inch gong I plink at 300 yds. its really fun and gives me trigger time. helps with holds and breathing and trigger control.
Also have a small flapper target with a 1/2,3/4,1 inch bolt heads for targets.
 
I have a 3/16" thick 8" square that I shoot anywhere from 50 to 200 yards with my CZ 452 lux. No need to buy expensive ar500 steel plates for a .22, just simply go to you local metal shop and buy a 3/16" regular metal plate and they will cut it to size for you. Bring it home and drill a small hole in one corner to hang the square like a diamond ... paint orange and build a small wooden stand and your good to go!
 
One of those orange balls that is shot on the ground is about a 4" target. With an "S" hook it was hung at 192 yards and it has taken a number of hits.
At first the string was 35" long as that was the calculated drop but a hit took too long for the ball to settle.
Shortened the string and resighted for that range. In two years the string has been hit three time.
A great interactive target. I doubt it would ever be shot out with a 22 at ranges in the 200 yard category.

Long piece of rebar with two 90 degree bends to make a U, installed upside down, and some rubber mat cut into strips to make a hanging strap, and grade 10 bolts with big fender washers to grab the rubber straps.

I have an 8x8 and a 12x12 plate. 8x8 out to three hundred isn't too bad in steady wind. 12x12 out to 400 is for funzies, more luck than anything else, as my scope can't even dial up far enough for a proper hold, and if the wind is changeable at all, forget about it. You really got to perk your ears up to hear the ping past 300, and the delay is hilarious. In the right conditions With a switched on spotter and good scope, at 100+ its not hard to see the swirl come right down on the target.
