Hey guys, I am in the market for a "do it all" quick, handy bolt action rifle for hunting, plinking and zombie defense. I know I want something in .308 Win with a detachable magazing, good open sights and a 18.5" to 22" barrel. I like the idea of having one center-fire rifle and getting really good with it. I will be using it to hunt moose, deer and black bear here in Ontario. I will also use it for a bit of target shooting, plinking and learning to be a good shot out to 200-300 yards. I may eventually scope it but right now I want some good quality open sights to practice with.

I understand I have pretty much drew a picture of the Ruger Gunsite Scout but are there any other options out there you guys can think of? I was taking a quick look at the new Savage 110 Hog Hunter, any thoughts on that rifle, the magazines look kind of gimmicky...

I am also open to a more classic hunting type of set up as long as it has good quality detachable magazines. Thanks

Mosberg Scout, longer sight radius than a Mosberg Patrol.
Utterly reliable with any ammo, I usually run cheap military ball through it.
Awesome accuracy. I drilled and tapped the rear aperture and installed a drilled through M4 allen bolt (i have several diameters to suit conditions). Nice short, manouverable rifle. If I could only keep one firearm, this would be it.

Check out the CZ 557 Carbine, it has pretty much all the features you want. I bought a Sporter model on sale from Durham Outdoors and so far it has been a solid rifle and very accurate out of the box. It’s built on a long action, but I think you can get the Carbine in a short action. The stock is a bit beefy in the wrist and fore-end, but provides good grip for offhand shooting. You can mount a peep sight on the integral receiver mount, or get quick detachable rings and use either glass or irons.can The Tikka T3X Battue might also be worth a look.

I had a Mossberg Patrol in .223. Good rifle for what it is. Very accurate, functioned fine. I prefer my Ruger Scout, but it's also almost twice the cost.

The ruger is a very solid rifle, based on what your looking for i think you'd be very happy with it. The quality of the magazines available for it are second to none. Mine hovers at MOA with multiple loads and the sights are excellent for shooting out to the 308's average MPBR, perfect for 0-300 yard shooting..once set that it is. the lack of on the fly adjustment kinda sucks. If looking for one do all rifle, id take a good hard look at it, no sense sacrificing quality over a few hundred dollars on a tool that will last you a lifetime IMO

That would be my vote as well

Tikka T3 Battue if you want something different then the Ruger

The sights are a little goofy looking at first, but theyre the best iron sights Ive ever shouldered. Extremely fast

Doesn't the patrol have its iron sights mounted ahead of the action, while the scout has its peep sight mounted behind the action?

Grab a good condition Husqvarna 96 sporter from Tradeex in 9.3x57 and tweek 'er to yer liking and load. Hard to beat these for an easy carrying bolt gun in the woods. Nice & quick to get on target. Quality rifles they be.:)

This is the route that I went. I owned a Ruger GSR for a while in the quest for a rifle that fits the description in the OP and found the Battue to be better suited for me in this role.

Zombie Defense bolt action !!

I'd mirror the above suggestions of Ruger Scout or Tikka Battue.

Also for Zombie Defense I think the Remington 783 short heavy barrel with a See-all night sight or Trijicon/Aim Point red dot would be fun.
