What rifle caliber would you prefer for large game?

These threads crack me up. Gives everyone an opportunity to pontificate their fave obscure chambering w/o any regard to the OP's question.

I think I answered his questions... As I stated, I find different calibers more appropriate given certain situations... And I don't consider the cost of ammunition in my decisions.

And you SuperCub? What thoughts do you have on the op's question? Because, you know you didn't answer it, lol.

See post #23. I left my personal oddball choices (257R, 280Rem, 300H&H) out of the answer. :)

Really, the right-est answer would be the obvious 30-06 or to a lesser extent the 308.

The question was what would "YOU" prefer... so I think the answer is open to any oddball that you might personally like.
 
I am torn on that initial question. My go-to is a 270wsm. But, I love the 270Win, 7RemMag, 30-06, 300wsm, and 300WinMag. I have killed many animals including big ones with the puny and underrated 6mm so I am not hung up on magnums. If I had to choose one it would probably make Jack O'Connor happy with the 270win.

But but but I have a 35 Whelen which is a 30-06 case necked up to 9mm... Does it count? Lol

You are correct in that observation. Perhaps I was reading too much into the OP and shaould have just stuck with the question at face value.

Saying that, he obviously needs a 30-06. :)
 
If I didn't handload - you can't go wrong with a .270 or .30-06.

Since I handload - it's very hard to argue with an 8x57.....

That's only if I could only have one. I never plan on only having one....
 
With the predominant game being moose and elk with the very real possibility of hunting buffalo and in the past large grizzly bears where I live I would be torn between my 8x57 and .338 wm if I was picking from my cabinet.
 
The lack of a 30-06 makes no sense to me. 30 is such an outstanding caliber. I should get a Krag. That's just ridiculous enough to fit in my 30 lineup. Then I could justify one of the really noisy ones.

I really like how we fall for the same thread week after week like it’s the first time anyone ever asked what cartridge we would pick for hunting deer, black bear, and possibly moose ha ha
