Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

my Modern Sporter will have:

- 18.6" MRA barrel
- Reverse style fake suppressor
- 12" MRA SLW handguard
- Basic LPK
- HiperFire enhanced duty trigger
- Colt Canada BCG
- Vortex Spitfire x3
- Magpul UBR Gen 2
 
Sorry if this is known, I am having trouble searching for it on the forum. What handguards are compatible with the upper? I am assuming anything with anti rotation tabs won't fit without some filing, but I'd like to be sure. I am trying to plan out which parts to buy before my set arrives and I don't want to spend money on something that isn't a drop in fit. Apologies if there is another post about this - I can't seem to find it.

Your looking for a formal list from ATRS of known compatible hand guards? I dont think such a list exits honestly. But your right about the tabs.

Maybe not a formal list, that would be a bit too much to expect(there being so damn many out there and all). But knowing the tabs won't work without fixing is enough I think to make an informed purchase, so thank you.
 
If you were to list the parts that you were considering, Alberta tactical and other members on here I'm sure will weigh in and give you some guidance.

If you take the time and read through this particular Forum you will see lots of parts of already been covered off as good to go or will not work or need adjustments to fit / work
 
Question for the Optic experts here. Im thinking of ditching the Aimpoint T2 idea and picking up a eotech Vudu 5x25 ! It's the smallest 5x25 available and review so far are pretty good and its not much heavier then a 1-8 .

It all depends on what you want to do with it. What reticle do you prefer. Ffp or SFP, moa or mils? No doubt it's a decent scope but is it worth the 3k canadian? There are others out there that might suit your needs better for cheaper and be every bit as good. I know eoteh has a great reputation with their other optics and are proven but being just a fledgling into the high powered optics game makes a guy cautious. Look at how long vortex has been around and their failure rate. Sightron just released a new s tac series scope that looks like it will be making huge waves in the prs world and with sightrons track record I wouldnt hesitate buying it if I was a prs guy. It seems to have a pretty comprehensive well thought out reticle for prs.

It's all up to you and what you want to do with the rifle in the end. I always look for real world reviews and failures and what kind of failures.

Ill never own another vortex after the problems I've had and their failure rate. I dont compete but I hate when equipment fails that I cant fix.

I was very much anticipating this scope as well, but after handling one and looking through it at RDSC it is not for me. Like you said they are very compact, but I found the eyebox quite tight. If you can live with the tight eyebox, it is probably the best 5-25 at that price point / size. Short scopes are a engineering compromise. For me personally I'd add a bit more weight / cost and go with a Kahles 5-25.

I do really like the Eotech Vudo 1-6 FFP scopes though. Quality is 95% of my Kahles 1-6 but at 65% the price.

Lifetime gaurantee and a great price.
Most of the stuff that comes with BCGs is all marketing.
Rifle goes bang each time? BCG do it’s part?
If the answers are yes, then awesome.

Mind you, there is a difference when it comes to longevity. I’ll pick on NEA as they’re name is 50/50. Either you hate them, or you like them.
I don’t think their BCG ever had any issues... but their bolts on the other hand did.

However, I haven’t heard of many/any negatives for the Brownells bolts

Edit to add:
Some bcgs are made of different materials. Brownells is on point with the big names, and looks like it’s just some o the big names stuff rebranded into their own.
Example, Toolcraft I believe does Aero’s bcgs, among the majority of the others (including Brownells)

I’ve got a couple and have used them in .308 and .223.
No issues.
I was told that a lot of companies use the Brownells BCG, just rebrand it with their Logo:)
 
Thanks for the reply, Will make sure I stop by RDSC and look thru it, I hate small eye boxes. More research is needed me thinks.

I hear this all the time.... and yet we've sent back something like 3x more Nightforce scopes for warranty this year... of course, the paperwork coming back says "No Fault Found", but the scope magically works again.

I'm a big fan of the brownells BCG's, they work great and are good quality. I have several of them, and we'll continue to keep bringing them in.
 
I own a ton of Vortex optics, have never had an issue, and have never personally known anyone that's had an issue with one. They're putting out a great product.

When mis matching barrels and bolts it is always a wise idea to check the headspacing. It can't easily be corrected short of trying different bolt heads until you get one that gages correctly, but this beats the hell out of blowing up a gun. Every company that makes stuff has a different level of plus or minus tolerance. Usually you are ok with the better mil spec or better parts, but it still is a good idea to check. Gages are not expensive. Don't mix brands of gages as they to have tolerances that may differ.
 
Just picked up a PSA Premium 5.56 BCG from irunguns. Its NiB and was only $140us. Hopefully it works with my BCL 18.6 barrel, I was going to get the NiB Brownells one but the reviews were not that great. Both said that the coating was thin and were not that easy to clean.
