I had understood that the 500 and 870 are basically interchangeable products, selling in about the same numbers, for about the same application, to a market 1/3 of which is fanatically loyal to one, 1/3 fanatically loyal to the other, and 1/3 who just buy whatever is cheaper that day.

But I see many times more 870 accessories for sale on the EE than 500 accessories.

Why is that?

Are 870s more common in Canada?

Or are they just more popular for folks what like angly black plastic furniture and dovetails, where the 500s more for the plad-and-pipe set?

Don’t quote me but the 870 has been around longer . The 50/50 sales between the two is prolly more recent specially with the 870 quality apparently going down

The biggest difference is mag extensions. The 870 mag is easily extended with screw on parts. To increase mag capacity on a Mossberg 500 an entire mag tube and barrel swap is in order.

Mossberg has been selling tactical versions of the 500/590 series out of the box for a lot longer, and in far greater variety, than Rem has been doing for the 870. If you want a tactical 500/590, no need to build one, when you can buy one NIB for what it would cost you to build something from an old used 500 sporter.

The 870 is also easier to mod in a few key ways.

There have been over 7 million 500's sold, so that duck isn't very lame. I have a gun locker full of them. I just use mine as shotguns, not as pretend swat guns. I guess I am in the plaid & pipe category. I dont much like playing dressup with my working guns. They kill ducks and bunnies by the hundreds as-is.

Have your Mossy threaded for chokes, and everything else after that is bling.

While there are no flies on the Mossberg's that I've played with they don't feel quite as nice and at least around here 870's are more popular all around for folks using pump guns no matter their preferred use of it. In the circle of guys and girls that I hunt and or shoot with there are 5 Mossberg pumps owned and all own an 870 or two. The Mossbergs are mainly .410's or bantam's for kids or grand kids to learn shooting a shotgun.

5 Mossberg? I have more than that myself,, from a 14" shockwave Raptor to camo'ed, 3 barrel hunting rig, all run smooth but the 590, after cleaning the storing crud out of it was the smoothest,, slick,, nutting wrong with 870's either, Chevy/Ford/ Dodge, same same, any of the top names will get the job done, just personal preference!

I prefer a Mossberg compared to an 870 when I have to carry them long distances over rough terrain. The 500s with their aluminum receivers are lighter than the steel receivered 870s.

The reason I asked is that I’ve been trawling the EE for an ATI stock for a Turkish clone which uses the Mossberg ring interface.

870 ones a plentiful, but 500 ones are rare and pricey.

I’ll keep watching, but I’m not sure how I want to proceed with the unit.
