Top load a .455 with 265 gr bullets. Then ask yourself - do I REALLY think I could stop an attacking bear with this? Possibly, if you hit him in a vital spot before he gets a grip on you. Once you're rolling on the ground, he has the advantage. You may have the satisfaction of dying together or surviving badly mauled.

Last summer i took both my MK1** Webley 455 benched on the picnic table at my Ontario farm.

Did set up the Oehler for some testing. i had 2 kind of ammo, Fiocchi 262 gr and house reloads from Rusty Wood 265 gr.

4 inch Webley...
Fiocchi at 765 fps /Energy 340 pounds…..
RW stuff run at an average of 775fps for 353 pounds energy

6 inch Webley…
Fiocchi at 790 fps for 363 pounds Energy
RW at 803 fps for 379 pounds of Energy

Numbers were more than i though, recoil is almost nil.

Those are not big bear stopper but it would certainly caught their attention.

I guess these Webley/ammo combo are quite potent for old iron, they are possibly the most powerfull antiques available… YMMV.

.50 Adam's was pretty potent. If you can find one........ .455 Webley I believe would be next. It's better than nothing........... bear spray is ####te....... 12 gauge is better, even a 2 shot BP coachgun.....slugs or 00 Buck......

Webleys are the strongest antique in my opinion. I have held a dozen of them over the last few years, 3 of them belonging to myself at one point. They wont be anywhere near a bear stopper in my opinion and i have yet to see one that shoots straight like a modern handgun, all have had little nuances that affect there accuracy. I am sure there is the odd tack driver out there but if the dozen I have randomly encountered weren't too good on the accuracy when it counts requirement, good luck with that.

Get a small shotty and some slugs

Not cheap... But hey, why not? Try and find an 1847 Colt Walker. Possibly the most powerful revolver up until the event of the 357 Magnum...

I know antique handguns are not considered firearms but can you actually go out and use these for hunting?

Here in Ontario there is no season for hunting with antique handguns... So there's a good chance you'll get charged with hunting out of season, or in this case, no season. That little tidbit came from the MNR. Just like if you tried to go big game hunting with a spear or pointy stick. LOL!

To kill a bear you don't need to have the most powerful gun. Webly or French will do just fine. One thing you need to do is drop and play dead. Bear will come to sniff you, when its sniffing you raise your gun and shoot him in the ear area of the scull. That's all. It will drop dead or run away. But when its charging, ohh god help you.

60 cal muzzle loader pistol. 50gr FFFg and a 250 gr ball or a 400gr slug. Dont pull the trigger unless you have too. She may bite back a little.

Other than forgetting the idea and taking a shotgun or bear spray the above is the best answer.

That's several times more power than any of the antique handgun cartridges and is a legitimate hunting type load.
