XCR-L Broken bolt carrier

I was out shooting today in fairly cold weather (-27C, sunny, no wind). Put about 15 rounds (.223/5.56 Hornady 55gr zombie max) through an XCR-L. The last round that fired almost sounded like a double shot and then the bolt would close again. Turns out the bold carrier broke into 3 pieces...

Was it just too cold out? Parts seemed well lubricated..

Update:

Took it in to wolverine a few weeks ago and Just got it back the other day. Fully covered under warranty. Didn't say what went wrong specifically though.

Contact Wolverine Supplies as they will replace the part immediately...I previously owned 3 NEW XCR-L 2011,2012 and 2013...all them had parts break on me.
I do love the design and appreciate the rifle but I had too many bad experiences and gave up on the platform due too major failures!

1) Op Rod Cracked in Half
2) Bolt Carrier Extractor blew into pieces
3) Bolt Release cracked in half
4) Gas Port was out spec
5) Major Jamming issue with out spec barrel
 
Had exactly the same experience with my XLR at an indoor range. Blew the magazine out of the receiver as well. Wolverine did offer my a new upper at a reduced price, however I decided to sell the gun as I just did not trust it. Bolt and brass exactly the same a yours.
 
Yeah give wolverine a call and they should help you out. Not sure if the upper is okay; some gouging in the rail area can't tell if it's deformed. Definitely a new bolt and carrier.

Looks like an OOB for sure, but I thought the XCR had a firing pin design like an AR15 where it couldn't protrude forward until the bolt was in battery?

I can't see the entire bolt in your pictures; is the firing pin attached the bolt head itself or the bolt carrier body? (the bolt carrier attachment is the new style)

If it's the old style where the firing pin was attached to the bolt head, I don't know if there's anything to prevent an OOB like the new style, but I'm not familiar enough with the XCR's to say for sure....

I believe it's the old style. Missing some parts shown in DaveMachine's post and the pin is fastened in the bolt itself.

His gun would have blown up had it been the case. It didn't.

What probably happened is the bolt carrier failed right after the initial pressure spike had dropped but the bullet was still in the barrel, case got pushed back as the carrier broke and the remaining barrel pressure bulged the case to conform to the chamber as it pulled back.

If the bolt carrier failed the bolt wouldn't be able to rotate and unlock out of the barrel extension. By the time the bolt is unlocked the pressure has already dropped to where it couldn't balloon the case out like that.

The only way something failed would be if the barrel extension itself failed and the bolt head pushed back with enough force to shatter the carrier. But you can see the barrel extension in the original photos and it doesn't look busted (can't really tell though)

The XCR has a way thicker receiver than an AR15 so it wouldn't necessarily blow its top off like an AR15 does in a catastrophic bolt failure. It could definitely bulge though which I can't really tell if it has or not.

Since the OP is saying it's the older bolt, I'm still thinking OOB for now...
