What’s your Best rifle with Iron sights and scope ?

How cold is it that scopes are freezing while you are hunting deer?

Well...we start rifle season off in Sept and hunt the general season until end of Nov. Late cow Elk is open well into January. Often we have a good foot or two of snow by early Nov. we can see temps of -20/-30 in Oct and Nov. Coyote hunting is done through the winter. Half our season is in summer the other half is full blown winter with about 4 days of fall In between.:)

Does Remington still make the model Seven? An acquaintance has one in 7/08 with iron sights and a scope that he likes very much.

I know that EAW QD rings and bases are available for the 700 and probably the Model Seven - they work very well on mine ... although they are pricey you do get what you pay for and they allow stress free scope mounting. I am sure there are other QD rings and bases that are less expensive and work as well.

I have a Marlin 1895 that I put Firesights on. With the LeverEvolution 325's, it outshoots almost all my other guns, scopes or not. I have yet to find a load that even approaches the Hornady stuff. I was thinking of a scope, but it shoots so damn well, and the Firesights are great in low light, so... The only thing I would change about the rifle is maybe put a big loop lever, but I find that they look effeminate, so I'll put up with the bruised knuckles.

Couldn’t of said it better myself… Them long days in the ground blind takes one breath to fog a lense and your toast pretty much

That's why the scope shield stays on until go time. Never had an issue. Sure can be tough on equipment up here. In the past I've had scopes freeze up so bad you can't change the power setting. You gotta remember to run your bolt/ firing pin dry or you'll probably get a click when the shot does present itself:)

I live in Northern BC. I thought you were talking about the internals of the scope just freezing or something lol, I've fogged up my scope with my breath.

My firing pin froze recently.

I have rifles with iron sights and those with scopes. A couple have scopes and iron sights but no way to use them together. I sighted in the irons with heavier commercial ammo and handloads.

I've had good quality scopes fog up on me several times from body heat or breath. Used Nikon prostaff, luepold vx1 and vx2 , Bushnell elite 3200- 3500 series. In rain and snow I've found the Bushnell worked best for me. This is one of the reasons when weather gets rough I like to hunt with irons or at least have the option to use them. Cz 550, 557, zastava m70, Ruger #1 or m77RS. Husqvarna rifles with side mounts offer a decent compromise of both worlds, thou a bit high it's still serviceable.

I run a number of my rifles with QR or QRW rings and bases, so that if I need to I can quickly take the scope off and use the iron sights...Remington with QR rings and bases...Rugers with factory iron sights or with NECG banded front sights and peep rear sights, and a screw driver to remove Ruger rings (re-attach with Fat Wrench to same torq and scope is still zeroed...Browning and Marlin lever actions with QR's is just a quarter turn and pull scope off to use factory irons, scope still zeroed when reinstalled...Winchester Model 88 with a picatinny rail, quick detach rings and pop ghost ring on picatinny rail to use with NECG banded front sights. Have tested re-zero capabilities on these t verify functionality if required. To date, I have not had to do so, but better to have and not need, than need and not have! LOL

I have a Rem 721 in 308 Norma Magnum.

It has the factory sights and an old Pecar 4X in a Paul Jaeger side mount.

The scope can be removed in less than three seconds to use the sights.

It is also fitted with a steel Lyman target receiver sight base. Takes about thirty seconds to install that for precise shooting at long range without the scope.

I'm into Contender carbines several have scope/iron sight options but I can't use them at the same time its one or the other but popping the scopes off is fast and zero is repeatable..

Here are two setups I use Leupold QRW rings to quickly remove the scope to access the iron sights.

21" barreled 375JDJ

22" barreled 45-70

Bolt actions I set up with QRW rings and bases when I remove the scope I screw on an XS Sights tall Weaver backup ghost ring sight on the rear scope base.

Nice looking set up there !!

Most of my hunting is what I would consider short range and heavy bush.

The best scope is a 2-5 zoom, and it is usually set around 2X or 3X.

Sometimes, because of heavy snow fall or pouring rain I prefer not to use a scope. I switch rifles on that morning to my back up iron sight rifle.

I urge you to NEVER go hunting with see-thru mounts. They are very dangerous and if you hunt our of a tree stand, they could kill you.

The problem is that when you use the iron sights (in a hunting shot) you have no idea where the scope is. You could get the mother of all scope kisses.

^^ I was just thinking, yeah the M14 platform, with a Sadlock mount, or CASM 2 mount, you dont have to remove the scope, or a Arms 18 with quick release mounts,
