So I'm hoping to get started in some PRS matches but looking for help on a setup. I'm trying to keep it around 3K for the rifle and scope, new or used and keep it in a somewhat common caliber and has decent barrel life. I was thinking something for production but tactical might also work cause of the 223 or 308 limit. I foolishly sold my reloader but will be getting another one soon so I will be reloading my own. Hope that all makes sense lol.

Try to track down a Tikka T3X varmint or CTR (there is a used 6.5 Creed CTR on the EE) buy a KRG Bravo and a brake and top it off with an Athlon and you will not be wanting for anything.

Need a mag as well but lots of places sell those.

Nothing wrong with Remingtons but I think with a Tikka you are more likely to wind up with a more accurate package. You also will not need to replace the trigger.

Remington 700 compatible, good...
Remington 700, bad...

Honestly, I'd either built something with parts, on a 700 foot print, or if I want to buy a rifle, and maybe drop it in a chassis (now or down the line) I'd go tikka. Remington QC is terrible...

I don't have any experience with the Tikkas that others have suggested but hear good things. The 2nd Rem700 suggested above would be a good call as well. The ESS is a great chassis and it come with a brake (the Kahntrols are ugly but they work, haha) and a nice trigger (TriggerTech regular). Whatever you do, just get something in 6.5 Creed. Way better ballistics than a .308 and decent barrel life. Shooting in Tac gets old, there aren't many guys who do it so you end up in a pretty small pool.

T3 wins Spanish PRS round. Not much hassle in putting together a comp rifle.

Proceed to the Precision and Target Rifles EE, search "Tikka ctr". 24" barrel, assuming the round count/condition is accurate you've found your rifle...the lack of a meaningful trader rating, would make me a bit uncomfortable, but it is a tidy looking deal. A new one isn't that much more though.

*edit* You could see if the guy would send it COD, doesn't look like it adds too much to the cost, and takes most of the risk out of the deal, assuming the Posties will let you open the carton before parting with your money.

The Gear heads here will have you dropping several months worth of Mortgage on a set up, they're right if you've got lots of cash to burn. If not purchase above today, that will leave you with a nice chunk of change for a scope and the other accessories that are required. That will get your feet wet, shoot a few matches, if it's what you're after, then get the $600-$1200 Chassis.

If you are fond of the low recoil of a 223, and low recoil does help... you might consider a 223 that feeds from an AI mag that way you can run 75 grain Hornady ELD bullets at 2900 FPS.

Any Rem 700 or Rem 700 clone can be outfitted this way, just put it in any of the many stock options for the Rem 700 that takes AI mags.

Make sure the barrel has a long throat so you can jam the lands with a case over all length of 2.5 to 2.6 inches and you want a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel.

If you can find one... you could try an RPR in 223 because it will do the above out of the box. If there is a downside to the 223 RPR it is that the factory barrel is too light and it will not balance well on a barricade… so I would suggest that you replace the factory barrel with something longer and heavier.

NO MATTER WHAT YOU DECIDE... MAKE SURE IT BALANCES ON A BAG IN FRONT OF THE MAG WELL.

A butt heavy PRS rifle is a pain in the butt.

223 is a possibility but I don't think I have every seen anyone shoot well with a 223 once the wind picks up and spotting hits gets pretty darn tough once you stretch things out there. The recoil of the 6.5 Creed is pretty light (and this is coming from a guy who shoots a 18pd 6Br) and it is very common cartridge.

As Redshooter said look into that gun. It already even has a couple things you will want/need.

The CTR has a bit of a light profile but it will do the trick. There was a 24" Varmint in 6.5 Creed that was for sale but it is gone it seems.

If you can stretch your budget Go Big Tactical is the way to go. Bighorn Origin Barreled action ($2,450) KRG Bravo ($525), TT Trigger (about $200). This is a package you will never out grow.

You could do the same with the Cadex R7 barreled actions and it will be a bit cheaper as well.

With your budget (3k rifle and scope), you're much better off to get a factory rifle like the tikka mentioned above and spend $1800-$2000 on the scope. I ran an expensive scope on my Remington 700, although not in matches, before going to a custom rifle build. That scope really helped me extract every bit of accuracy out of my Remington 700 compared to cheaper scopes.

Even if you could stretch your budget, stretch it on the glass end of things right now and I think you'll be happier in the long run. If you find you really like the game and want to upgrade, you can always sell the rifle you have, keep the scope and put it on the new rifle you build/buy.

Thanks everyone. I'm liking the Tikka in the KRG. Any preference between the Tikka T3X varmint or CTR? Also how are those Athlon scopes? They look like a good deal

If you can find one for cheap, have a look at the Bushnell HDMR2/DMR2. Workhorse of a scope for PRS, super reliable, durable, track perfectly and should be around for a good deal with the recent Bushnell 20% off promo.

I would add if you had to choose between higher magnification and better optical quality, pick better glass. A crystal clear image at 15x is way better then a fuzzy mess at 20x.
