Most all S&W pistols prohibited - no 105+?

The series 39 and 59 pistols are both 4" barrels. The S&W website shows all of the new semi-autos except the M&P with 4" barrels. None of the places I looked show replacement barrels for Smiths. Glocks, Lugers, but no Smiths. Has S&W written off Canada as a market, or is there someone who sells replacement barrels to make them restricted? You would think S&W would make longer barrels for Canada.

If I wanted a 1911 I would buy a Colt. I was looking to pick up a model 39 or 59 double action to use for CRFSC, but would need to obtain a 105+ mm barrel. There are lots of these around, because they are prohibited, but no source for barrels.

Your best bet would be to contact Questar to get a barrel (and the pistol while you're at it) longer than 4". They managed to get them for the glocks, S&W 5946 and 5906 - so you should be able to get one through them somehow...

hsld.

Barstow makes barrels for Smith@wessons. I got a PC 4006 this week and it has a 51/2 inch barrel from barstow in it.

I checked Bar-Sto's site, they list Glock, Colt, Tanglofolio, not even CZ, and no S&W although I read an article about them making CZ barrels. It would be cheaper to buy back the CZ I traded in for $400 than buy a S&W 39 or 59 plus a US$200 Bar-Sto barrel. I guess I will keep looking for a cheap P38, P1 or CZ etc. It can be rough and with a shot out barrel as long as it is DA/SA for CRFSC. PS: I like the looks of Mod. 39 & 59 S&W, but "there's no accounting for people's taste" as the milkmaid said as she kissed the cow.

S&W autos are ugly as s**t..why do you even want one

Used to think that, too. Owned quite a few of the 59 series pistols and their off-spring... but then acquired a S&W 1066 10mm, which is a limited edition stainless single stack pistol. Didn't think she had the uglies like her little sisters.... :D

Wish I'd kept 'er.... :(

At one time I had a CZ and a 3913. The 3913 with it's stubby little pipe was slightly more accurate than the CZ and it was much easier to find the brass afterwards (mil spec CZ). Also the Smith shot factory ammo without issue, while the CZ used cast bullets that were slightly oversized.

I've owned a few 39's and liked them all. They may be ugly to some, but not to me (and quite a few others). And they feel really good in the hand. 5" barrels used to be available from some of the places listed in GunList, but I haven't seen that in quite a while. Maybe on-line. You might try Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces. He makes legal barrels for quite a few guns, and he probably makes them for the S&Ws. Anyway, he's a good man to get to know, and he'll tell you straight what he can do.

BarSto used to make barrels for S&W but stopped producing them late last year... the last batch he made came to us.

Irv stated that there simply wasn't enough request for S&W aftermarket barrels to make it worthwhile to continue to make them. They can't afford to make just one or two at a time... they need to run 25 to 50 at a time. Other than Questar in Canada he was getting very few orders for them, so he put all the tools away and no longer offers them at all.

I believe we might have one or two 5906/5946 ~106mm barrels still here.

I had a 639 and it was rubbish, the old Star BM was more accurate and more reliable. The 659 is even worse because the grip is such a poor shape. I had a 5906 and that was marginally better than the 659 but I still didn't rate it.

S&W have made very few semi-autos that are worth buying IMO. The new M&P is okay, and some of the Performance Center guns are good, and there's always the model 52. The only 3rd Gen S&W I ever liked was the 3913 and the 3914. Put a Hogue grip on it and get the trigger pull sorted (they all stack really badly at the end from the factory because of the firing pin safety) and that is a nice gun.

But the Smegma and most of the first three generations are not that impressive. I know people say they like the 4506 and some of the other guns but they are outclassed by the P220. I quite liked the 745, but realistically you could get a better 1911 for the same money.

If it wasn't for Miami Vice I doubt the S&W autos would have developed any reputation at all.

I own a few 3rd generation Smiths, I like shooting them and haven't had any problems with them, I used to own some Euro trash like a P226, P7M13 and 92SB and got rid of them. To each his own, more Smiths for me, especially the 12(6) ones.:D
