Cree hunter upset after Quebec police question if his guns are registered

If the law requires firearms to be registered, then it should apply to everyone, regardless , he has no right to expect special treatment. Hopefully he is fined, and this creates an uproar in Quebec.

Agree. I also didnt know that the FN have been “TRADITIONALLY” hunting with firearms long before the settlers came...

Firearms instructor my @ss...he should know the law better then the average “elder”

I don't want to see anyone charged with a nonsense paper offence like this, regardless of the colour of their skin.

Not with firearms........

- “We haven't been being bothering anyone with our traditional way of life, we're just trying to harvest what we eat."

Yup, so are all the other hunters.......

No story here.

It has nothing to do with skin colour and everything to do with privilege. I’d like to know if it were me being checked and I didnt have my firearm registered, would I have been given the opportunity to walk away in the same manner? I highly doubt it. No one is above the law no matter how dumb it may be

Couldn't have said it better myself. If I did I'd get an infraction. "Traditional"

Yep - my direct ancestors were using firearms in Canada for almost 50 years before before the first Native did.

Obviously no one ought to be 'above the law'. In this case, as I said, the law is stupid, and no one ought to be charged for it. Not hard to grasp.

Whats not hard to grasp is that no law enforcement authority should have the right to pick and chose who he/she decides to enforce laws onto. Either its law or its not. The rule of law is the rule of law. And in this case, we all know why it wasnt enforced.

I suppose one might think it would be nice in theory, but it isn't reality and won't ever be. Discretion exists at all levels of enforcement. From the police officer at roadside who decides whether to give you a warning or a speeding ticket (and what kind of ticket), to the Crown attorney who decides if there is a reasonable prospect of conviction, to the judge who decides to what extent your past criminal record will impact your sentence (just to give examples.)

And in this case, we all know why it wasnt enforced.

We don't know if there will be any follow-up, actually, but from his perspective he might think he was stopped and questioned specifically because he was Cree.

My point is that I don't think the registration law ought to exist, or be enforced, against anyone. And enforcing it against someone - anyone - does nothing to advance the rights of the firearms owner community in Canada.

The main point here is as there is no longer a long gun registry, why was the officer asking if the firearms were registered???
Whether or not the fellow was native is not the issue.

Right....discretion was used to this fella’s benefit....and yet here we are with a public complaint to the media because HE WAS ASKED if his gun was registered....

What bothers me the most is that the guy says he is a firearms instructor??? In my mind, anyone in that position should never be able to cry ignorance as its his fiduciary responsibility to society to know firearms laws if he is teaching and helping individuals obtain their firearms licences. Im sorry, but the excuses will never ad up in my mind.

He talks abouts rights......last I checked, we do not have a right to bear arms in Canada
