I always found the Winchester Super-X 37 grain hollow point the best for gophers. Hitting them in the middle drops them on the spot, too high and they do the chicken.

Just moved to an area with 13 stripe gophers (always lived too far north before) and I’m pretty excited about trying out my savage mark II on them at 100 yards+

Even though you misjudged the distance I’d still say that’s some good shooting!

haha that gave me a good chuckle.

nice shootin!

At that point you just need to take a piece of fabric, apply glue, and start tossing the bits and pieces on...

Thank You. We have Richardson Ground Squirrels here, so they can be 12=14" from nose to tail on the Big Bulls. This one was medium size. The Sask and AB Gophers are slightly less cagey, but smaller targets. It's all relative.

Nice shootin', that's a classy rifle for gopher action...would love to see it beside the gopher in the next photos! :)

Saw a few of those on my second last trip to AB, we found them allot more wary than the Richardsons. Only go shot opportunities on 2 if memory serves. One was on the run while shooting (=miss) the other I just plain missed and it didn't stick around while I adjusted for wind. Cool things, and smaller than the Richardsons we got in the same field minutes before.

Yeah they’re about the same size as a red squirrel (maybe slightly larger), they love to dig holes on the shoulders of the gravel roads. I’m sure they will prove to be much harder targets than the jack rabbits I’ve been shooting, should be a good test of my marksmanship.

Well, I've only ever flown over Saskatchewan...but if the gophers there are anything like they are in Alberta, you can pretty much pick the distance from which you engage them. For a change of pace, we'll walk through a field with a shotgun. Even with #7-1/2 target loads and no choke, you can get close enough quite easily. :) I can also confirm that at times, they won't even get out of the way of a 2+ ton truck going less than 1mph through a bumpy pasture.

If you want to shoot them from 15-20' away, you almost always have that option where we go...so if #s are out of hand, it's volume first...then we stretch things out at the end of the day for fun.

The long shots we usually bet each other... sometimes as much as a buck a K. Makes life interesting.

I got two dirt pigs last week. One with the truck and one with the .30-06 at about 145 yards. 155gr Win ballistic silver tips. Was kinda like a red mist with some goo piled up. I hit it on the first shot, I about crapped my pants when I actually hit it. Bit rusty after not shooting much through the winter.

I have a buddy that just bought 200 acres of farmland. He said I'm welcome to hunt whatever I want, as long as he gets a taste of the meat. DONE DEAL!

Shot 2 today with the Walther GX-1. Aperture sights. 1 was at 50M and dead easy. The other was at 85M and I had to dial up the rear apeture... thankfully the Apeture is marked for such things... and whilst difficult to see, the 'plop' sound was VERY Gratifying.

I bet the person who used the rifle in 3P shooting is turning over in their grave at the moment.. their 3K Olympic 3 Position rifle is being used as a 'gopher gun' to that person I say this. HELL YESSSSS!!!!!
