Hey guys,
Had my M-14 at the range yesterday. I put about 20rnds of surplus corrosive junk FMJ ammo down range and with the M-14, pretty much right out of the box, stuff trigger and open sights, I was getting a 7" group. Basicly I was just blasting away and putting all my shots into a 8.5x11" sheet of paper at 100yds

Anyway, I was just wondering how well you guys are shooting with your out-of-the-box M14s? I'm sure with mine there are ALOT of little things that will pull those groups in (Hungry, I'll be seein' ya in Calgaristan:D).

oh, and as an aside, I was satisfied with my "all the shots on the paper" grouping.
 
I to have done very little to work a better group found I was getting 3' at 100 using some 155 hand loads the one thing I have done is tighten up the rear sight seemed a bit sloppy. Plan to find a glass stock and trying shimming and tightening a few things up . Very happy with the trigger though.

The only experience I've had with an out-of-the-box M14 was my Springer Scout and it jammed up after 3 rounds.
All of my shooters are SEI builds and the are MOA or better.

I realize that's no help, but what the hell.

Hand loading can impove things a bit (if not alot), but I've found in the past, most rifles shoot much better than their owners..... practice, practice and more practice. Dry training is "very good" as well.... boring but good!
 
If you were just blasting away with corrosive junk fmj, 7 moa doesn't sound too bad.
Try shooting the corrosive junk carefully using a rest, and see what the results are. Just because its corrosive primed doesn't necessarily mean that it will be inherently inaccurate.
Then try some good ammunition, fired carefully with a rest. You should get groups smaller than 7 moa with both the corrosive junk, and the good stuff.
What sort of 7.62x51 ammunition are you using that's corrosive?
 
The only 7.62x51 that I know to be corrosive is the Czech stuff that came in about 12 years ago. It had either a black primer, or a red sealant on the primer.
I bought about 5000 rounds at Can. $100 per 1000, and am just about out now.

I had my completely stock Norc M-14 out at the CFB Chilliwack range a few months ago, and was quite happy with the accuracy of it, using the Czech ammo.
Several "V"s at 600 metres.

I can't remember off hand what it was but it's in light blue boxes with a white/blue info sticker. It's the stuff with the Black Primer.

Yeah, I'm sure you guys are better shots than I am. What I think will really tighten my groups is a lighter trigger and a thiner front sight blade.

I was shooting off a rest on the bench at my range. Unfortunatly ammo is expensive so I don't get out to shoot as much as I'd like.

I am not a marksman and this is what I was able to do from a bench after installing and adjusting a scope. No other modifications. I think it is quite decent for a hunting rifle. Maybe the brands of Amo can make differences in groupings, and you can find a lot of treads on CGN for upgrades you can do on a M-305. For my part, I will eventually install a Boyd's stock on it for cosmetic and rigidity reasons.

You know, if someone reported 7" groups with a Mini-14, there would be all sorts of comments like "Well, what do you expect, they're really inaccurate, glad I sold mine", etc. A M305, out of the box, should do better than that, but there are just so many variables. Hungry's clinic will certainly address ways of tweaking a M305, most of which won't cost a lot. There is also a download available of how to accurize an M-14 at Milsurps.com
 
a lot of it has to do with the loads you're using - before i knew better, i was using 180's and getting 1 inch or less 5 shot groups at 100 yards using a 4x12 scope off a bench- these were my favorite hunting handloads, ie 180 grain winchester slug, 44 grains of 748, cci mag primer, and remmy case- the 150 grains wouldn't group for me at all- it also shot a LOT better with the hinged buttplate up and a FULL 20 round mag- in other words full auto mode and more weight forward of the action- i should imagine that 165's will do similar- also found it does far better on "rapid " fire than if you sit around , let it cool, and take another shot ie blam blam instead of blam wait 2, 3, 4, blam
 
Blasting junk ammo in a new rifle is a little disheartening, but it does serve a purpose. Every gun needs to be worked in a little before the owner can decide if he has a good rifle. I bought a rifle that was as bad as yours, did some work on it and now I'm very pleased.

165 for hunting, 168 target-if you got the means to rebuild it lots of times, the "big" shooters use 175smk- that's the 1k yard load- it used to be 173, but lets face it - who amongst us ( aside from a few) delves into that heady realm?

My bone stock m305 will put 5 Lake City under 2" every time with open sights. I'm extremely happy with it and don't plan on changeing anything.
