Old lever action identification

We are trying to figure out who this ancestor is, and possibly date when this picture was taken. He has what looks to me like a Winchester Mdl 94, but there were a number of lever guns from that era that look similar, so I am not sure. Maybe it's a Henry 44-40? Old lever actions certainly aren't my area of expertise! This guy may have been in upper Canada but more likely had already headed west in this pic, in Wyoming or maybe even made it to BC by the time this pic was taken.

As a further bit of trivia, I think the image is reversed. Look at the loading gate

Heard that was the case of a lot of this type of pic; that's why this image gave rise to the theory Billy the Kid was left handed

The photo hazz bin reversed.

My vote is for a 1892. The model 92's frame bumps down in shape to accommodate the locking lugs protrusion. The bore looks bigger than any of the calibres the 1894 was made in except .38-55?
