Hiyas,

a friend of mine is looking to buy his first rifle. He's looking at getting a bolt action rifle, in 270 or 30-06 for around 500$. He's been suggested this gun by dealer I know very well. The problem is I know nothing about this gun. Does anyone have feedback, experience, comments, suggestions regarding this gun or other viable options?

Here's a linky h ttp://www.savagearms.com/111fcxp3.htm
I'm pretty sure this is the one he is talking about. If not, it's the FXP3, not the FCXP3, whatever the difference is...

Anyhow, any info is appreciated.
Thanks!

from what I read (no first hand), tack driver gun with totally lousy scope and rings. I'm looking at the same package, probably upgrade the scope and maybe throw the Simmons on a plinker.

I bought one last year in 300 WinMag w/accutrigger. Replaced scope and installed limbsaver recoil pad. It IS a tack driver. I started reloading and use the 300 for everything from squirrels to moose. Great rifle!

they are a decent rifle with a terrible ring/scope setup, but Im sure it will work for most peoples hunting/shooting needs

It's not the greatest scope in the world, but - as mentioned, it'll work. Also, as mentioned, most people decide to upgrade it down the road. Don't kid yourself that it's totally necessary, but a good scope is a helluvalot nicer to use.

I have one of the package guns, but scope replaced with a Leupold, rings with Burris Signature and bases with Ken Farrells, trigger replaced with a sharp shooter supply. I like the gun, shoots and operates great, its a 300 Winmag, and I like the detachable box magazine.

If he doesn't need a detachable mag, get a Stevens and use the money saved to buy the scope and rings.

:confused:I'm confused. If the scope and rings are not that good and some guys have bought the "package" and then replaced them, why buy the "package" in the first place, why not just buy the rifle for less money and then do your thing with scope etc ???

:runaway: I know confusing, but it was the only rifle available in 300WM with a removeable magazine (Clip) and did not have th accu-trigger. As a bonus I get the scope mounts installed on the rifle.

The spare scope is going on some other rifle and the crappy rings are going in the bin.

My uncle bought one of the packages about 15 years ago IIRC. The scope is nothing special, nor are the rings, but he puts 1/2 box through it before taking it hunting and the kit has always worked for him. I have more in the optional parts for the stock on my target rifle than he does in that gun, but he has never missed and it has been accurate enough for what he uses it for.

I bought it used. I wanted the detachable box magazine and that calibre (300 Winmag). I think at the price they sell, they are basically giving you the scope and rings. If you didn't want the detachable "clip" as they call it, I'd buy a Stevens rifle.

i was reffuring to the guy who uses a 300 win mag on squirrels that definantly aint something you'd wanna do to offten the neighbours might not like hearing rifle fire at all hours of the day

The package deal (111 FCXP3) is the cheapest savage rifle you can get. If you don't care about having a blind magazine, don't have a use for a garbage scope, and don't care about having a slightly crappier stock, you can save $100 by going with a Stevens 200. Same action as the Savage. The one thing that the 111 FCXP3 and the Stevens are missing that all the other Savages have is the accutrigger.

Personally, I can't do without a detachable magazine so I went with the 111 FCXP3, then replaced the scope, rings, + bases. Leupold 2 piece STD bases, Leupold medium height rings, 3200 Bushnell Elite scope. Came to around $700-something with everything.
