Has the SKS become the Canadian shooter's equivalent of the Ford 150?

Go to a gun show. Go to a gun shop. Go hunting. There are SKS rifles everywhere. Accessories galore. People buy them even if they don't need them. Is this the Canadian shooting community's equivalent of the Ford F150?

I had a Russian laminated SKS in the early 80's.... a real beauty. I was collecting red rifles, and there was not too many of those around in Canada...... I was 18 and was mostly buying collectable firearms.

In 2019, I do not see why I would have one .... they have a purpose....giving young lads the opportunity of shooting a cheap gun with cheap surplus ammo.....

But when you can afford higher end firearms.....I dont see the point.

I rather shoot anything else...but an SKS

But if you have to bury a gun and a create of ammo... I can't think of a better candidate! But then again, with surplus ammo drying up, there might be better options for you end of the world stash.

I've long thought the SKS is todays Lee Enfield, in a sense.

Everyone has at least one of 'em, often bought greasy and out of a box containing another 10 just like it.

The ammo is cheap and bulk, sold in surplus.

People are cutting them up and tossing parts of to make them 'lighter' or less fiddly, or putting their own accessories on them. Some are drilling and tapping them for optics.

Given enough time, I imagine that the prices will start to climb as eventually, the soviet supplies WILL dry up. If we don't lose all our guns by then I think they'll start hitting the $500+ range in another decade or so, heck they're allready $300+ for a good one in a lot of stores.

It seems that the lowly SKS has a lot of haters but why does everyone have one then? I have 2 and think they are great fun rifles, and even though I have much nicer more modern firearms there is something cool about them...my 2 cents.

Every man needs at least one SKS.

I’d strongly beg to differ. Never had, nor never wanted one of those things.

Wait, that's actually a thing???

You’ve never come across a couple a redneck types with their lifted 94 f150, Luke Bryan cranked on the radio and a couple of “good ol boys” usually donning a real tree/plaid ensemble shooting off their tapco SKS’s and their dads old Winchester into a fridge, dishwasher, beer keg etc? (Note that I did not specify what because when you ask it’s always “my dads old Winchester” like that’s supposed to narrow it down.)
