Hiyas,

A friend of mine wants to come moose hunting with me this year but he needs a rifle... I told him I would let him use my backup (my backup for deer, as I've never really hunted moose before this fall), which is a 32. win special Mod 94. Now, I started wondering if it's enough gun to bring down moose properly. 90% of the shots taken where I hunt are around the 50 yard mark or closer. And we'll be hunting in the eastern townships of quebec so by far not the biggest moose on the planet.

What do you guys think?

PS: I use a .308 so there's no issue there.

Take him to the range with the .32. Shot placement is what will do the trick and that is hard to do with an unfamiliar gun.

The .32 Special is the ballistic equivalent to the 30-30. How many moose have been dropped with the ol' 30-30;) However I wouldn't advise either calibre beyond 100 yards. At 50, should be no problem at all.

It sure will

When I was a kid in the homestead days in northern Saskatchewan, a homesteader who was an exceptionally good hunter, used a 32 W Special. He seldom, if ever, fired more than one shot for a moose. Because of his great hunting ability, the 32 Special was known far and wide as a much better calibre for moose, than was a 30-30!

keep shots to within 150 yards and it should work just fine. Placement will be critical so the closer the better

I cant see how its so much better....

As H4831 said it was " Because of his great hunting ability "
You know how some people are because very skilled hunter does something with a particular gun, that must be the best gun EVER.

But that said, I am the proud owner of a 32 special that my grand father bought new, and if I ever get the chance to go hunt moose I will probably take the 32 along. As moose is one of the few things that my grandfather never got to hunt with it.

Very much so. Make sure your friend knows that the round is very moderate in power for moose. It's not exactly known as a premiere Moose cartridge.
So a good shot and good shot placement critical. Also no Hail Marys, Texas heart shots, and loooooong shots etc. with a 32Special for moose. Pass up those shots, hunt closer.

If you went back in time to a Northern Ontario deer camp, say 1952, you would have a great time listening to the .32 Special owners arguing with the .30-30 owners as to which was more powerful, accurate etc. My buddy uses a .32 Special Marlin 336. I used to own a .30-30 Marlin 336. I went to a .35 Remington Marlin 336 just shut him up in camp about that .32 Special. He is not on this forum so I will say he has killed alot of stuff with that rifle.

cheers Darryl

right...

anyways the 32 win spl is fine, same as the 30 wcf, I still cant figure out why it was even made, any excuse to sell more rifles I guess.

I'm not sure why it was made either but I read a magazine article this spring that said . (and I think this was mostly speculation by the author) that in the early days of reloading brass cartridges it was hard to get smokeless powder.
But black powder was easy to find and the larger bore and different twist of the .32 special made it more efficent with black than the 30-30.

Again just speculation.
