Registered my lower as a compete build, RCMP wants pictures of lower?

Hey there, sorry if there is already a thread somewhere on this, I am aware as to why they made this request but wondering if anyone can clarify. So I followed the thing on my lower AR15 registration certificate that says to inform them if it can discharge ammunition within 30 days, something along those lines. I called them and they wanted the barrel length and caliber, pretty usual stuff I think. Then they said they will mail the new registration certificate. A couple weeks went by and I called in again to check if they sent the certificate, she said yes there should be one on the way but she will request for another one to be mailed just incase. Well a couple more weeks go by and I get an email from RCMp Specialized Firearms Support Service and they said they are working on my registration of the complete build and requested pictures of the lower receiver with a pdf explaining about why. I know it's to look at the "pocket" thing to make sure it can't be easily converted or whatever the reasoning is. I know my lower meets their examples of approved designs but here is my main confusion. Why do they now need pictures of this lower, isn't it an approved design when they initially allow the lower for sale in Canada? How would that even work if for example it didn't meet their approved designs, I know I would be out of luck but how do they approve a lower for sale in Canada and then decide that it is not approved after someone completes a build? Anyone else had to deal with this before?

Thanks Jon

Hey 9mill, how did that unfold? did you just call in and state it was already an approved lower? Interested to hear how that went.

Sounds like they want to see if it's SP1 compliant. Not sure of the exact status of this under law but AR lowers that are compliant do not allow you to just drop in an auto sear.

Yeah I see the intention what I don't understand is that, don't they do that when they approve the lower for sale in Canada? It seems weird that they want to check it now after hand.

They can’t check every lower that’s imported. It’s a spot check to make sure the lowers are being built to the specifications they were originally imported under.

interesting, for mine they had no category for my specific receiver and barrel length combination so they had to make one. Even then, they just wanted an exact length of the barrel. no images required.

Is this the pdf you got from the horsemen?

https://calibremag.ca/new-ar-15-semiautomatic-standard-rcmp/

As far as I remember there were a couple of brands of AR lowers that had previously been allowed to be imported and then Murray Smith and the gang decided they could be "easily converted to full auto" and have now prohibited them.

As above - what brand is the lower?
Yes that's the exact pdf I have a V7 Weapons Systems forged milspec lower they were for sale from Red Deer SC. I looked at their pdf and it seems like the lower meets the "acceptable designs" so that's a good thing at least but I will try to call them to confirm everything. Now I am a bit worried

I think CTCS used to sell them as well.

They may be fishing, they may just be checking - who knows. If your lower fits the 'acceptable design' in that pdf then I wouldn't worry. Give them a call for sure.

Part of this vast issue is that the lab allowed several diffrent manufactures lowers in that had the pocket larger then allowed. When they realized that someone with a lathe could open it up and drill the third hole in the reciver did they get histerical and started to request this info from the end user

Yes, they prohibited a couple specific AR-15 models last year due to discovering they were machined to M-16 spec not civilian AR-15 spec. They are looking at the machining around the trigger group. I think this affected less than 10 people if I recall correctly? But now they are updating the FRT entries for all AR-15 models without pictures. That's the story I was told when I asked about the need for pictures.

intersting that it states that the AR15 is just a semi-automatic rifle (page 1 #5) and not an ASSAULT RIFLE, take that Wendy and Doctors against gun violence.

I too got one when I went to make mine a full rifle. I replied with why do they need pictured of the upper as it is not a controlled part. No response yet.

Oh that's strange for sure. They just want pictures of the lower from me not anything about the upper besides wanting to know the barrel length and caliber

Ah ok so it's possible I am one of the first people since that fiasco to have informed them of a build on that specific lower? I would then assume that after all this the next person to do so would not have to provide photos as the FRT is updated by the info I provide for them.
