Hi islanders,

I got my recreational seal hunt licence. But I live on the mainland and there ain't many people to learn from around here.
I legally can't hunt their known settlement. So as far as I know I'm trying to intercept roaming seals along the shore.

Do you bait them and wait? How to bait?
Do you just navigate until you find one laying in the sun?

Cheers,
Phil

If you’re shooting seals in the water let them exhale and inhale before shooting, helps to prevent losing animals to sinking. Never heard of anyone baiting seals usually spot an stalk or waiting at an air hole in the ice flow. If you’re hunting seals on pack ice wear a flotation suit, carry ice picks around your neck for easy access, rope and never go alone. A dead dog for retrieving seals in open spots in the ice and or the longest thinnest black spruce sapling 8’ with a gaff hook at one end works well and can be used as a reaching pole if someone does fall in ( floater suits weren’t meant for swimming). 243 was the go to cal for distance And 12 ga when stalking on open water. Hope this helps.

PS lemon juice on seal flipper pie is awesome
PPS sorry didn’t realize you’re on the west coast, can’t imagine you get much pack ice.

Do they have seal hunt licences here on the Wet Coast? I thought that was an Newfie thing.

I haven't heard of 'personal use' seal licenses on the West Coast, but of course, there are other coasts other than East and West, and the East Coast is a big, varied place.

Check out "bigland trapper" videos on YouTube. Lots of good seal hunting videos in Labrador. He usually hunts from a boat along ice edges.

We go out in the spring on the ice, shotgun, dart and or rifle, I've farted a few, and hit a few long range with my cousins 223 rifle and then zoom everyone raced to get it lol, we eat the seal, some people use the skin for crafts, I donate the meat and the skins to the elders

I would love to be able to hunt seal and try eating them. A seal skinned coat would be great as well. I dont know how many hides it would take to make a coat but ive often thought about buying them at auction since ill likely never get the chance to hunt them

Will do. However nov 15 to dec 15 don't offer any ice. Only snow on the beaches.

Thanks Adam.
Shotguns are prohibited for recreational hunting. The earlier recreational season completely change the game too. There's no ice and no babies for them to gather around. It's a feeding and migrating time for them. Must be why I heard about baiting...

The coast of Quebec, in the St-Lawrence gulf.

My buddies uncles friends nayboors buddies son waits fur dem tourrists tuh feed'im and then

The seal, nawt the tourrists.

I understand the "recreational" seal hunt is a new thing in Quebec. Here in Newfoundland, there has been a long time commercial and "personal use" hunt (the closest thing to recreational, I suppose).

It is almost entirely conducted from a boat, and either on the ice or around the ice. There's no baiting. You just go where the seals are (or you expect them to be.)

Ok sure move away from Labrador and *NOW* you want to hunt seals lol!

Good luck on the hunt my friend!

Hey, I must be a slow learner! :p
Newfies don't own them either; Magdalene islanders have a long story of living of the seals too. They lost their share of fishermen to the sea along the way. Reading about the history of seal hunting is an interesting chapter of canadian history.

I believe I now live closer to the sea than you! Hoping to move by the sea within a few years, raise my girls in a more genuine life.
Thanks Max.

Is your personal use season nov 15-dec 15 as well? There can't be so much ice during that time, no?
