Can I Cut 16" Midlength Barrel to 11.5"?

CFC info they gave to you is BULLs**t...

100% my thoughts. I'm definitely calling again tomorrow and will try to get something in writing. If I luck out and talk to someone who is competent, and they tell me that shortening a restricted 16" barrel is ok AND I get it in writing, then the first thing I'll do is get a middy 16" CMMG barrel and chop it to 14.5".

You don't want to talk to anyone at the CFC. You want to talk to the forensics guys at the RCMP.

They always have the right info and it is the law. Get everything in writing before you proceed into any grey area.

Remember, guys, Deckard is ALWAYS right:D

What were you talking here, anyway?

Oh yeah, barrels... right:D

When the subject becomes boring, can you please discuss bullpups? :runaway:
Are they legal or not?
I've seen today an industrial pressure-washer with something that resembles the bulpup stocks. It places everything behind the trigger. The funny thing is that the damn thing can function without it.
So, is it legal or not, huh?

I dont even understand why people want to chop a 16" midlength barrel - go buy a 10.5 instead. Seriously, NEVER BUY A CHOPPED BARREL FROM AN UNKOWN SOURCE. I have little confidence that most people know what they are doing with gas port and chopping. I know at least few years ago an AR armourer opened up the gas port of a client's AR because it fails to extract - great, more gas into the system while the extraction is too early already. I have little faith.

Yes, but it is better to have a functional 16" than a questionable 10.5!!!

OK well,

Assuming factory barrels shorter than 16" are not available...

What's the best way to make a 10.5 from a 16?

If you go ahead and just chop a 16" to 10.5", re-thread the end and add your flashider...

What are the chances it will still work just fine? (Has anyone done this?)

Put a 1000 rounds through it to test reliability?

Absolutley, I have done I twice. Ok only once really because the 9mm doesn't count. My 5.56 Armalite works 100% though. Probably getting close to 1000 rds now. I would trust my life with it.

I told them not to take your call ;)

Most 16" barrels (carbine gas system) have a gas port to small to be chopped to 10.5 and function reliablely - some may work when really clean but not when carbon builds up.

I'd much prefer to get a smith in Canada MAKE a short barrel than have a hack job done on a factory gun.

To chop a barrel, the gas port needs to be adjusted. There are some numbers floating around, and some people just keep drilling until it works. On the other hand, many people are using whatever spring and buffers they find when they "experiement". Maybe they were using an ammo with a different port pressure that is not loaded to spec when they adjusted the gas port size - voila, you are screwed if you buy one of these!!!
