7.62x39 brush gun SKS v.s. Mini 30?

If you can get a used mini 30 for sub 800$, then go for it, I'd never pay full retail for one, the prices have almost double on these since I bought mine

Before you lay out any money, are these rifles going to be around in 21 days ( SKS, Ruger Mini )

I didn't start the post to talk about gun politics but I get it that that is on people's mind. But, realistically, there is nothing that will happen in 21 days. C71 gives the government in power to reclassify specific existing guns as prohibited and grandfather owners of such guns etc. - by ORDER IN COUNCIL; all of which is horrible. They could probably do that for one named gun after another (obviously starting with the AR15 for political reasons), but I have heard Trudeau, Goodale and so on on this. They are talking about a new firearms bill - not doing a whole s**load of OICs. In their terms, that would make sense - as banning everything by OIC would be really politically reckless - and could really be so undemocratic as to destroy the liberal party for all time (which would, of course be a shame). To bring in a new gun bill will mean that Parliament has to be in session and all of the parliamentary processes would have to be respected.

The math for doing that isn't great either (for the Libs) as I don't see the Liberals getting a majority. In fact, their arrogance in not having C71 declared coming-into-force before the election (i.e. arrogantly expecting to win a majority - or minority - allowing them to declare C71 coming into force, after the election) may cost them big. If there is a Conservative minority - or a Conservative majority - all these issue will go away - and Trudeau will be revealed as the most hapless political loser of all time.

BTW don't just hope that this happens, get politically-active. Don't just vote (BUT DO VOTE), volunteer, write letters, work to influence you contacts, etc.

Now back to brush gun talk.

It is worth noting that c71 has nothing to do with their power to ban things. They've always had that power. The one thing it does is provide a mechanism for grandfathering - if they ever put that part of the law into force, which they haven't as of yet as far as I'm aware - which is irrelevant to the comment 45CAT made because the liberals won't be grandfathering whatever they plan to buy back.

Stainless Mini 30. More money than an SKS but worth it. Much easier to mount optics and the factory detachable magazine is a huge plus.

An SKS from Hi Cal with the mag adapter installed and a full length rail from magwedge is still way cheaper than a Mini30...

Used my MIni at the range then turned it into a deer rifle. With a 1.5x6 scope I've shot deer up to 50 yards...... even a 220lbs dressed buck last fall and I will keep using it. Light and reliable, it does the job, but at today's prices I wouldn't buy it as a deer rifle. I wouldn't use an SKS either but not for the same reason. I'd use a short, light, scoped lever action.

After I inherited grandpa's lever that's what I switched to, but with open sights as I never have to take a shot further than 100 yards. Not because the SKS wasn't good enough, the choice was mostly sentimental.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned a shotgun yet.

I’ll often take half a dozen guns to deer camp with me. I’ll take whatever suits my need (mood) into the bush with me that day. As the pup in the gang, I’m often the “chaser” (we call them doggers) and a good chaser has to be willing to dive into the thick s**t to kick up deer, especially if it’s miserable weather. So I like something with a short barrel, waterproof or I don’t soaking it, and something I don’t mind banging off rocks and trees. My favorite is a remmy semi 750 carbine with an 18 inch barrel and shortened pistol grip stock. The pistol grip I discovered to be one of the best things for dogging, allowing a lot more flexibility holding it while squeezing between trees and rocks.

My other go-to is a Turkish tactical shotgun, for all the same reasons. I like it when I know I’m going to be pushing right up near guy’s positions. I feel slightly more comfortable know it doesn’t have quite the same range as the 308.

I’ve taken my sks (which is stock) and found it uncomfortable to carry all day. With an aftermarket stock though, it might just fit the bill.

Took down my first two deers down with an SKS; either one died after the first shot.

Did you mean both died after the first shot or neither died after the first shot?

Do you use slugs or buckshot when dogging with the shotgun?
