I might be pursuing a job opportunity in downtown Toronto...never been there. Where are the clubs for IPSC/3gun? I'd like to start checking out places for rent with reasonable transit times to downtown as well as competitions on the weekends. A friend recommended Burlington?

Reasonable transit times and Toronto are mutually exclusive. My advice would be to look at something near the subway; east, north or west. As far as shooting I have no real knowledge what’s happening there, I moved away long before I took up the hobby.

Good luck.

If you stay near lakeshore GO train you can avoid traffic by taking train to work (under an hour from Burlington).
Living at Oakville/Burlington you can catch weekly IPSC matches at Burlington and Hamilton both are indoor on Tuesday and Thursday.
Driving to Waterloo, Oxford, Waterdown, Sharon, Crumlin, Guelph, etc clubs are within 1..1.5 hours (on weekend).

Burlington is a good recommendation. It’s a pretty central location for action shooting. Within about an hour drive you have access to almost a dozen IPSC affiliated clubs plus another 10 or so that will put on occasional CQB or multigun matches. Add another 30 mins to your drive and the number goes up even more.

As Euxx says, the Lakeshore West Go train line makes it pretty easy to get to Toronto during the week so you can pay for all those matches.

With the municipal gun ban being a possibility, staying out of the city itself is probably wise. Look at the GO transit system map and look for somewhere to live close to a station out in the 905. If work is near Union Station you're great, otherwise you might have to pick a spot further out along the line that gets you closest to work. Note that many of the trains only run inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening.

The other issue is that most of the clubs in the GTA have long waiting lists to join. If you can get a toehold somewhere and you're an IPSC shooter, then signing up for a match does let you visit around and shoot at the hosting clubs, but having a home club somewhere is the trick.

Thanks all for the great info.

A DOZEN clubs within an hour of Burlington? What clubs host matches consistently or how can I narrow that down? Are matches just all over the place, take my pick kinda thing??

At The Galt Sportsmen’s Club we hold 3gun matches every month (members only). We don’t have ipsc but we have ODPL matches several times a year and practices weekly. Great club but I’m biased ;)

Contact the IPSC Ontario BOD and request access to the match calendar. There are L1-L2 matches nearly every weekend within 1-1.5 hour drive from Toronto.

Wentworth, Waterloo, Oxford, Waterdown(?), Crumlin(?), EESA, Burlington (long wait, but you might be able to bypass by doing walk-in at the safety course)

Try to get place 401/404
IF money is not an issue then get membership at Target Sports Canada (once you know the ranges you can switch club).
They have IPSC practice on every tuesday night and IDPA on wednesday night, just pay $5 .
As far as i know you have to be member at Burlington for practice .

I am currently member at Target Sports Canada , Burlington and Sharon

^ You're a member of Burlington and don't know that you DON'T have to be a member of Burlington to attend IPSC practice night?

I've been a member of Burlington for about 10 years and have been attending pretty much every Tuesday IPSC night for over 6 years now and in that time non members have been able to participate in the practice night.
