7mm-08 VS 308

I am purchasing a Ruger American compact topped with a Nikon Pro Staff 3x9x40mm very soon for my wife to use for hunting.

Looking for some feedback on the effectiveness of the 7mm-08 on bear, moose and deer.

I have taken all 3 with the 308 but was thinking of getting the 7mm-08 because of the lower recoil for the wife.

It is a very light rifle (6lb) so concerned it may have a bit of bite chambered in 308.

I do like the availability, choice and price of 308 ammo, (I do not reload)

Any experience/info/feedback greatly appreciated.
 
7-08 will be great for the wife. Low recoil but very effective within the appropriate range for those animals.
 
It will do exactly what your .308 did.

7/08 is a .308 with a bow tie. ;)

I have both and shoot and load for both, I prefer the 7/08 but there really isn't anything one can do the other can't.

Put a decent 140gr in the 7/08 and go hard on any critter.
 
OP, there isn't enough felt difference between 150 grain 308 Win bullets and 140 grain 7-08, when they are fired at similar velocities, for most people to notice. The 308Win and 7-08Rem are kissing cousins.
 
I don’t think she will feel the difference between the two if in same gun if using 150g in both or 140g. Might make sense to buy 308 if already set up for it that way there will not be a mix up. I have had both I did not feel the difference

Most kills around here in Manitoba are under 200 yards, I think it will work fine by the feedback from everyone, thanks
 
The 7-08 has better ballistics, and gives up nothing to the .308 in killing game. Another option to lok at is the 65 Creed. It will also have no problem killing moose and has low recoil.
 
OP, better option may be find wife a youth model in 308 and have her hold in in the gunstore compared to std rifles.

Wife hunts with a youth model 7-08 not because of recoil, because we feel it's a good round and was available in youth model.
She tried 30-30, 375win, 270, 30-06 before we figured out calibre/recoil had nothing to do with it.

Rifle balance did. Std rifles just simply have too much "end" barrel weight and she had trouble holding the rifle steady for any length of time.

Put a shorter, weight closer to shoulder youth model in her hands and she hasn't looked back.
 
A savage axis i tried in 7mm08 hated federal fusions but loved the hornady whitetails. Both were 139gr if i remember correctly. Point being, always try various ammo to see what the gun likes lol
