Is there a way that i can make my glock 17 or really any firearm thats metal look worn? like the high points on the gun that will show wear marks and holster wear and general wear, i've always loved that look and cant find a way to do it safely.

Steel wool is probably the safest for not going too far, I would not use sandpaper etc as you will likely get gouges. You will need to keep it very well oiled after as there will be no protection on that exposed steel. I assume your tying to do similar to what they do to "Antique" freshly painted cabinets etc by thinning the finish on the sharp edges.
Just be sure you want to do this! Once its done the value of the gun is going to drop significantly.

I did a bunch of those offshore produced, non firing clones that were made out of pot metal castings but otherwise fully functional and looking real, for a movie company around 20 years ago.
I used crocus cloth on the sharp edges and to dull the shiny surfaces. They had done some stills and found they were getting reflections from the bright lights off their firearms. They all looked like they had been issued and well used.

Most of the "battle worn" stuff, looks like "sand paper in the shop worn" and is terrible. Not only too course of paper, obvious patterns, obvious finger marks, but most outstanding to me is, the wear is often in places that would rarely get contact, let alone wear through the paint.

Yup, get a holster, practice.
Also don't forget it is a Glock and is battle ready. Want it to look used, drop it, throw it, drive over it and abuse it at your leisure (unloaded). There are lots of Glock abuse videos on Youtube, doing everything imaginable to them. Lots of different types of abuse to accelerate the worn look.

As others have said earn it through genuine wear or the other option is to look at getting a battle-worn cerakote done if you don't intend to use your guns hard.
Personally I kind of like the in-between look of a non battle-worn cerakote job that earns genuine wear through use. That said there are some really unique versions of battle-worn that are only able to be accomplished through the use of cerakote such as "sparten-worn". Check out @blowndeadline on ig for pics of some amazing examples.
