This isnt really a hunting thread but i wasnt sure where else to put it.

Ever since a buddy from work stayed in telegraph creek gor a few days a couple years ago and i seen the pics ive wanted to go

Well this june im going ( been wanting to for 3 years) for 6 nights ( staying at a b&b) before heading upto Atlin for 2 nights.

Me and a buddy are mostly going to hike around and explore also check out the small town.

Any one ever been there or live there? Any advice?

Im wondering about fishing (catch and release) and if a white person can (with BC license) as its mostly natives there its also a reserve.

Also having a PAL am i allowed to carry a rifle while hiking, maybe some plinking in the mountians. Edit, the online BC gov hunting site accepted my nova scotia hunters course so im able to buy a small game licence. Ill be getting that.

Plan on doing a few good hikes using TC as our base camp in various ditections fishing any lakes or rivers on the way and maybe a little gold panning too.

Edit: the route the trip is taking is, Halifax to Terrace, then to Stewart for 2 night before going to telegraph creek for 6 nights and then to Atlin for 2 night

Thanks

Many many moons ago we drove into there and chartered a flight to a moose lake.
Only suggestion I can make is make sure yer fruck'in brakes are really really good.

You can fish the tahltan river right at the bottom of the biiiig hill. Don’t pack your rifle on the reserve land. The whole place burned up in 2018. They really fixed up the road to get people and gear in.

Thanks and im going to rent a toyota in Terrace when i land so car should be new and pretty reliable.

And thanks for the info. And you say no rifles on reserve land, so thats all the land for a few hunred kms around telegraph creek. I should just leave it at home? I read that "Reserves are considered private property so you would need to get permission from the band" if im not hunting, think that may work?

And glad to hear about the road. Ive watched every youtube video of the drive in. Looks pretty freakin wicked.
And yeah its a shame most of it burnt. The house my buddy stayed at a few years ago burned down in the fire. And the owners couldnt get fire insurance so they lost it all. They now live in southern BC.

I put a Yukon thread in a few years ago and it shows the road into Telegraph Creek. Have not been there since the fire so all very changed now. How do you plan on getting there? A couple of ways. One is over the top from Edmonton on the Alaska Highway. The other way you drive Hwy 16 through to Kitwanga (60 miles west of Smithers) and then drive north. The Hwy 16 route will show you a wider diversity of country and take you through some pretty special fishing country. Also the run from McBride to Endako is all the same over and over before it starts to get pretty again. The northern route is one I am not overly familiar with but it has a lot of historical significance as pertains to the construction during WW11. So that is one decision you need to make. You could do a circle as one option. That whole highway from Kitwanga to Watson Lake is a beautiful drive. Dease Lake has just about anything you need if you are short. It is remarkably different than what your part of Canada looks like. One last reminder, get in shape, lot of up and down.

See you are flying to Terrace. Disregard parts of above post. You can go north out of Terrace towards New Ayanish, hang a right and come out at Cranberry Junction. Takes you through the Lava beds. The road from New Ayanish to Cranberry Junction can be one big pothole. Some of the Terrace CGN'ers can update on that part pf the road.

You better call the BC Conservation Officer Services before you decide to go and carry a firearm. The you will know for sure what you can and cannot do! And what could happen if you do carry a firearm and end up shooting a bear in self defense, as a non-resident.
Might be easier to hire a local native as a tour guide and bear watch.

Yeah i am going to do this, i dont plan on shooting anything but if needs be it wouldnt be bad to know the outcome. I have no issues leaveing my rilfe at home. Thats not a very big part of the trip. I just thought if i was allowed i would as i cant in NS and it would be cool to get to do some shooting in the mountians.

Also my buddy who stayed there told me i should bring one. But where his friend lived in telegeaph creek ( his wife was from there her whole life) he probably had a different relationship with the natives of TC.

Hiring a local native as a guide would be cool aswell
Im sure they could show us some really interesting spots and be interesting to talk to on the trip. Also it would support the people of this small town.

There is a lot that’s not reserve there. I’m guessing you are looking at the Tahltan land claim. There is very little actual reserve in the area. Purchase the iHunter BC app and it will show you the real boundaries.

You are correct. I was going off this map https://tahltan.ca/nation/territory/

I will buy the app you speak of..good idea and it will save a lot of questions. This is why i made this thread.

Thanks man

Edit, sweet its in stalling right now. Not bad price for the queations it will anwer. And also about fishing locations too

Edit again, ok i see what you mean about the actuall reserve part. So the rest of the land is just like private and crown land, Ill be able to fish with a lisence and also carry a rilfe hiking on the crown land?

Carrying a rifle during a lawful game hunting season with out license and tags and from out of Province May garner some close scrutiny from the Provincial Game Wardens should you garner their attention first.
Have fun and enjoy.
Don’t forget your rain gear and warm socks.
Rob

There is no problem with you carrying a weapon of some sort while hiking in BC. You don't need a hunting License, but you could get a small game non resident lic if you wish, although there won't be much open in June anyway (Maybe rabbits?) All the north of BC is pretty amazing country. Ask the car rental place to throw another spare tire in the trunk. :)

Carry a rifle if you want, but you'd probably come under less scrutiny from the CO's if you had a shotgun filled with slugs. I lived in that area for nearly a decade, none of the locals go into the bush (hiking, berry picking, cutting wood, etc) without a rifle, so they wont care except if they think you may be hunting. Lots of little lakes to fish all the way up hwy 37. I'd second the fellow who recommended going up through New Ayanish to Cranberry Junction, at least on one of the routes. Some pretty cool laval flows in there.

The parks area manager in Dease Lake would be a good one to contact about local hiking routes as well.

thats an interesting story there grizzly adams
and kamlooky, a newfie hat and rubber boots you suggest?

yes i dont wish to garner the Provincial Game Wardens attention first. and yes rain gear and socks will be packed for sure. not letting a little rain ruin any of the trip

i was even going to get as small game license just to have one along with my fishing license, and extra spare tire, good idea really.

also looking into it i may change the route a little to stay in Stewart for a night or 2 before heading to telegraph creek, also taking the Ayanish to Cranberry Junction route up to highway 37 to see said lava flows. ill be there to see stuff and explore so i should listen to you guys that live there

Stewart seems like a cool little town to check out as well

thanks for the dease lakes parks manager tip

as for a rifle, i have no issue taking a shotgun, i did want to take a rifle (do some 2-300y shooting) but really thats not a big part of the trip. although 20kms from a road it may be nice to have some type of animal protection if needed (i know the chances are very small, and a shotgun would work for that. so im still very open to that if it saves a head ache)
i build a rifle a few years ago that i wanted to take on a goat hunt in BC, ill never afford a goat hunt, but it would be cool to at least carry the rifle in the mountains. its a 6.5 pound scoped 6.5x55 built on a no5 LE action

yeah i was thinking that would be the best way to be able to go goat hunting. make a friend who already does goat hunting and then tag along with him one season then its only the trip cost and a couple hundred in tags and fees. (no most cost then this trip)
i hope i see some goats or sheep, im pretty interested in the wild life, its going to be nothing like nova scotia.

yeah it will be lots of kms, 1800 or so.

and thanks for the tip about the extra days, ive watched youtube videos of all the roads i plan to drive so i had and idea what i was in for after seeing pics of the telegraph creek road. ( im a little nervous of the telegraph creek road honestly)

the trip is kinda open ended, so far we have 1 way tickets that land us in terrace June 11, ive been in talks with a b&b in TC and they are open with no booking in early June.
telegraph creek is the main reason im going to BC (spending a week there is the most important part of the trip for me)
my wife is ~ok with me staying for 10 nights

nothing is set in stone yet other then landing in Terrace, june 11nd, going to telegraph creek and 10 nights not counting flights.

im not sure when ill be able to go back so im thinking of changing the plan to this none below. once i figure out the actual plan ill book everything then (hopefully this week or so)

land in Terrace
drive to and stay 2 nights in Stewart
drive to and stay 6 nights in TC
drive to and stay 2 nights in Atlin
drive to Whitehorse air port and fly to halifax
