Bear Defence is a classic, but I was always told moose were more dangerous than bears. They have a reputation of being soft, but they are certainly a big strong animal and the few occasions that I have seen them and elk at the same time the elk keep a healthy distance away and get out of the way.

"On September 15th, 1937, Portage Pious, of Fort St. James, whilst hunting moose, was attacked by a moose he had shot the previous evening, thrown in the air two or three times, was badly gored and died of his wounds on September 20th.".

And some artwork.

My ex father in law had a bull walk ten yards in front of him and he got a click when he was hoping for boom. He had a few very tense minutes playing hide and seek around some too-small trees.

A couple years ago I was bow hunting down in the Porcupine Hills for deer and was working my up a ridge in a big coulee and I see a cow moose in the distance working it's way down the ridge towards me. I didn't think too much of it and though I would quietly work my way around her when all of a sudden from behind the cow a bull flanks around her and starts walking straight towards me in an aggressive manner. I stop and realize he is none too pleased with me being so close to his lady as he continues coming towards me huffing and stomping the ground. Oh, crap......:sok2

I now realize a drastic change of direction is needed and I reverse my course and start heading back down the ridge with the bull still in pursuit. Thankfully he is just walking......fast.....but not running. If he starts to run I am in real trouble as you all know how fast a moose can move when they are motivated.........:(
The area is fairly well treed for the most part and I was was looking for some big Douglas Firs to get between me and the bull but unfortunately I was now in a bit of an open section with no nearby cover..... :runaway:

The timber line was still a ways away from me and at this point I was starting to get concerned so I pulled out my trusty can of bear spray and had it ready to go as I continue to the tree's and while keeping my eyes on the big bugger as he approached.
As I made the tree line the Bull now realized I didn't want anything to do with him or his lady friend and thankfully broke off his march towards me.......

Exciting morning!

Edit: Would the bear spray have stopped the angry bull?
I don't know but I certainly would of given it a try if it had come to that, thankfully it didn't....

While I’m all for defending yourself from a dangerous animal, he seems to have manufactured the situation by trying to force the moose off the track. The snow is obviously deep and the moose didn’t want to get off. He should have detoured around or stopped completely until the moose was no danger. A few years ago I saw a moose that died by a track as sledders had pressured him constantly until he ended up exhausted and dying. An unnecessary waste.

In the Rut moose are arguably the most dangerous animal on this continent , cows with calves - just as bad .look up les shroud and his story - 2 hours of getting stalked .
Ps : good friend of mines dad dropped his moose every year with a Savage 99 in .308 .

There's another video on YouTube of another snowmobiler doing something similar, but even more obviously escalating the situation until he and another rider were endangered. Fortunately this one ended with the moose running off, but simply not chasing the moose down the trail in the first place seems likely to have been a better choice. Oh, and he fires a warning shot into the air over the treetops in the background. Safe backstop? Guess he didn't care about other people potentially being near where the bullet came down, just enjoying the snow then catching it. The pistol would have been just as loud had he fired into the ground.

I'm gonna put a cow elk with a new calf, based on personal experience, right up there , with the above.

Grizz

A cow moose kicked int he front fender of the suzuki sidekick we were in years back. We came around a corner to a cow and calf. She tried to push it off the road over the bank and the calf didn't want to go. As soon as it hesitated, she charged us and kicked in the corner of the vehicle. It was a 2 door convertible, she could have kicked my friend through the window. haha. It was all good in the end, we left them alone and I pulled the tinfoil suzuki fender mostly into shape by hand.

While grouse hunting in late September/early October, I have had bears tell me to piss off. I have had moose tell me.

The bears have been waaaay more polite about it.
