Here’s my dilemma. Bought and put together what I thought to be the perfect hunting rifle. Kimber mountain accent rechambered to 284 win with a Vx6hd 3-18 on top. Very nice and light to hike with but turns out where I had my best chances last year where I live I was always under 200 yards. More like 30-80y. So I’ve decided to start over. Here’s what I’m thinking. Short barrel as in 16-18”. With a brake. Light weight setup as well. Around 7lb with glass. 1-6 power scope. Caliber could be .308, 30-06, 338-06. 375? I handliad so open to anything. Fiberglass stock. Or similar. Any suggestions? Thanks

Your 284 will kill stuff just as well at 30 yards as 300

Agreed. I want to leave it as is for when I go places I can reach out a bit. But I want 1X scope for the tight stuff I was in all last season. Plus I was thinking larger diameter bullet possible slower for close range.

Just shorten the Barrel on your Kimber and replace the scope with a Leupold VX111 I 1.5-5 or go to a RED dot ! OR build a Rem M7 with a 18.5 " barrel in 308W or 338 Fed and a Wildcat stock and run the Leupold 1.5-5 scope on it . My ultra Light M7 is in 6.5 CM with a 20 " barrel weights in at 4 -12 and 5-8 with the Leupold Ultra light scope on it - VERY handy rifle light weight rifle ! I have a Ruger GS Scout with a Syn stock and a 16.5 " barrel in 308Win with a Bushnell Red Dot and i really like it too ! Very Fast to come up and get a shot off ! Lots of ways to SKIN a Cat ! jmo RJ

I have a Nice Tikka T3 in 338 Fed 22.4 " Barrel - Chop it off to 18.5 " and that would work well too ! jmo RJ

Both sound great. Don’t see any of these wildcat stocks around. Liking the 338 federal! Is it stainless? Any idea and brass? How much $$?

That’s the easiest route- change the optic. Although I’ve used a Leupold 1.5-5 enough to know there are much better options these days.

Second easiest route is buy the Ruger Scout with the Tupperware stock

Thought about the scout. Can’t handle the plastic stock. And I’m willing to go Vx6. Or swaro. Or zeiss. Whatever I can find for a decent deal in the 1-6 power range. And I want to leave the Kimber alone.

Buy a Husky from Tradex, one with a big hole in the end like 8x57 or 9.3x57, mount a Kahles 1.5-6 on top and have at it. Quality old school rifle, lightweight, 20" barrel, wont break the bank, and you will have it forever.

I play in Similar areas with lost of mountains ...lots of big game and big bears. I run with a Marlin 1895 stainless guide gun in 45-70. Love the iron peep site, drops everything I shoot at. Good shot placement and it’s good for deer to griz...and no problem with bush. Also almost indestructible and no rust.

9.3x62 something might work. Nice handy little bolt action with a low power scope or red dot.

Maybe a lever action so .45-70 seems logical?

For something specifically short barrel:

What about .338 Federal or 358Win? .308 case, heavish bullet, with a 18-20" barrel used up all the powder you can from the capacity. Useful (aka heavy) bullets, options in bolt actions or lever such as the BLR..?

Not a lot wrong with this advice on scope. Kahles as well did a 1.6-8x42, think Meopta still make a 1.5-10x42, Leica made a 1.5-10x42 and Swaro make a something like 1.7-13x42. A buddy of mine has the Swaro on his 375 H&H and loves it.

A good idea to go with a number 4 / duplex reticle and an illuminated centre dot in my view

The 9.3 x 62 (Tradex would be my first stop for one of these great quality under priced rifles); 45-70. 444 Marlin are all well suited (I'm not a lever action guy). Try open or peep sights; my eyes are old and except for very long ranges, I shoot better with iron sights than I do with a scope; better with peep sights than I do with V or Buckhorn. The old boys used peep sights for a reason: they work. These are classic calibers; one from Europe for large game in the bush and open, and same for the two North American calibers. .375s and such are overkill, and will be heavy rifles.

Had that same itch to scratch, my choice was a Kimber Hunter in -06 pushing 200 gr soft points
First step was cutting the barrel length, then because it came with good rings just threw on a 2.5-7 vxiii for last season
Plan to put on a reflex dot instead of the original idea of iron sights
No reason to dis the stock so far

Nothing wrong with a red dot, but the range is one thing; changeable light conditions out and about; particularly on a bright day, can make them less than desirable in my experience.
