“Splined” is also misleading, from what I understand the handles collar is smooth inside and the bolt body is knurled. Not exactly male/female splines mating. At least from what I’ve read - I’ve never taken one apart.
Hopefully Mr.Leeper will chime in, but this was supposed to be a remington thread so I’m not sure he will.

Well these days for me the Rem 700 and the .308 are really not that exciting in the world of rifles and cartridges, with that being said an all Stainless Rem 700 in .308 win would make a very practical hunting rifle but thats where it ends,
if your truly wanting a cartridge for all of North American game animals (polar bear, grizzly bear, bison, black bear, moose, sheep, caribou, elk deer etc you should be looking at a 30 cal Magnum as a .308 Winchester would not be my first choice.
If I was going to get an all round deer hunting rifle I would pick up an used Kimber Montana 8400 (WSM donor) and rebarrel it to 6.5 PRC, this way you'll have the very best in reliability and if you ever decide to shoot lots and long range you have one of the most sensible/versatile rifles/cartridges on the planet, an excellent long range cartridge thats light on recoil, and the quickest cheapest route to a poor mans full custom lightweight hunting rifle........sorry Remington Fans but the truth hurts !
Im not saying a 6.5 PRC will kill a moose any better than a .308 just that it ticks off a lot more boxes than the .308 win.
For the most part Im pretty sure your mind is made up judging by your original post on rifle/cartridge but do yourself a favour and do some more research on other cartridges/rifles, talk to a few gunsmiths for opinions, if you must have a Rem 700 look at the 2020 SS model 700 5R or and older BDL stainless model 700.

Speaking of 2 piece bolts, does anybody know if the cz 550 bolt is 1 piece or two? Cant seem to find a source to answer my question.

Weatherby Fan said it best. A 700 in .308 is not that exciting. Gun nuts, and I put myself in that group, are usually looking for interesting ways to accomplish a job at hand. That doesn't take away from the fact that a 700 in .308 is a very useful tool.
How about a PM vs taking this even farther off the rails than it is

As mentioned, I will never be hunting a polar bear, grizzly, bison, sheep nor elk. I would have to travel thousands of KMs to find one of those animals.
I am not married to the M700 nor the 308. Another model rifle or perhaps a 30-06 option would definitely be something I would consider.
I chose the M700 in 308 as they are both extremely common. Finding ammunition, parts or a fellow to work on the rifle (if required) should be relatively easy. I also like the low recoil property of the 308. The M700 seems to enjoy a solid reputation. The combo seems like a good place to start the conversation.
Building a custom rifle or customizing a rifle is simply not a place I want to start my journey. I am a simple fellow who likes utility. I don't mind spending some money but I also prefer a go to gun over something so fancy that I wouldn't want to hunt with.
Remington M700? Winchester M70? Tika? Savage? With my limited rifle experience I really have no brand loyalty. I am simply hoping to simply find a solid, durable rifle that will last me a long time.
