If your main hunting rifle for yotes on up to elk were a Sako 75 Hunter (wood/blue) in 300 Win Mag which of these model 75's would you buy for a backup rifle:

Hunter
Stainless Synthetic
Hunter Stainless (walnut/stainless)
Laminate Stainless
Finnlight

The other question is: Are two 300 Win Mags better than one ;) or would a 300 Win Mag and a 270 make a better combo? Also, I'd like to save some weight by going synthetic but I really prefer wood....either one is a compromise, unfortunately.

Anyway, let me know what you think! :)

Presuming it's a backup rifle and it will spend most of it's life in the case, why not get a Tikka in a calibre you are comfortable with that has a similar trajectory to your 300. It's quite a bit lighter than a Sako 75, get a 270.

wow a sako for a back up rifle, my idea of a back up rifle is like a stevens 200 or a savage 116

Well, I'm not going to use a Sako as a truck gun or anything :) I just want a couple "go to" guns. I don't have a rifle collection like a lot of guys....sure I buy and sell sometimes but I just want 2 that are keepers.

So if you were to only have 2 big game rifles, which second rifle would you choose?

Martin, I just can't warm up to Tikka's. I've handled a few of them and they're nice enough but not for me.

One smallish, 243 or 270, and one biggish, 338 mag or better. With both of these you've got all you big game covered. If a guy was starting fresh and looking for a pair to be his "do it all rifles", a .270 WSM and a 340 Weatherby would be a very hard pair to beat.

Of the models you listed, I'd pick a Finnlight, and probably a 270 Win or 270 WSM.

I consider the Finnlights to be lightweight only in comparison to other Sako's, but they offer a synthetic stock, and stainless metal. I have one in 7mm Rem Mag, and it has become my go to gun, especially in inclement weather conditions. Of my Sako's, its the only Model 75 I own.

A 270 of either variety offered by Sako is a pretty nice companion for your 300 Win Mag.

If I were to start over again I'd probably get a 338WM instead of the 300WM but I've got too many miles on the 300 to start second guessing now. It's an excellent rifle chambered in a great hunting round. It would be cool/convenient to have 2 of them but I think the 270 is the way to go.

lol Calum, someday if I start collecting rifles a model 94 will be on the list...til then, it's just eye candy.

NWTHunter, my only issue w/ the Finnlight is I've never had one in my hands. At least I've been able to hold the other models. I'm not sure I'd like the shorter, fluted barrel....I like a little heft up front.

If I had to pare down to two I'd go with a 338 Win Mag and a 270 Win. Given my current locker, neither would be a Sako. That's not a statement about Sako, it's just that I do not have one in 270 Win, and my 338 is a Dakota 76.

I hear you, my go to rifle is a Sako AV 300 Winny, last fall on our elk/moose trip I took my kimber 308 as my backup.

Lifes too short to hunt with an ugly gun.

If I had the cash to get a couple nice CRF rifles in addition to the Sako's the Dakota 76 would get a looong look...a couple model 10's wouldn't be bad either. :)

Martin, I've come to the same conclusion. ;)

You've got a good all around gun, now get a 375 or .416. Tons of fun and kill very well too. I'm leaving tomorrow, going East so I'm takeing my STW and 338. If I were going north I'd be bringing my 375 or one of my .416s. Filling the mag with big rounds just puts a smile on your face.

MTM, I knew they made 75's in 375 H&H but I just found out a couple days ago that the 416 Rem was available as well. They also utilize a semi CRF on those rifles which I like. Hmmm, same action length as the 300WM too...you might be on to something! :D
