Shotgun only deer hunters?

Benelli SBE camo with 24" 1:28 ROT riffled barrel wearing a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 LRD in Burris Signature Zee rings tossing Remington Core Lokt Ultra sabots this year.

Back up:

Rem 11-87 SP in Speedfeed Monte Carlo synthetic stock with 21" cant 1:34 ROT fully riffled barrel tossing Rem core Lokt Ultra sabots....has been my meat gun for years! Gets the job done well!

I havn't set mine up yet as i just learned my tag is for a shotgun n bow only area. I may scope my smooth Nova for the season or may take a crack at a new cross bow.
BigRed ran me through some drills with one of his bows with different shooting techniques and i was surprised how accurate and easy to use they are to shoot.

I plan on using my M37 Deerslayer, my 12 gauge variant, not my 20 gauge, because I plan on incidently hunting black bear as well as deer in NS this fall.
Although I think the 20 will probably do okay, I want to get the biggest blackie I can find so......
Hence the larger option.
Also using, as issued iron sights, and a set of good binos. Scope not required for my shooting distance.

Even though I can use my mauser rifle, I really like the parkerized finish of the Ithaca, for often wet wet weather here in the maritimes. Using Brenneke 2 3/4 inch Rottweil Classics.
Plus I have great confidence in this combination. When I pull that trigger, I want something to fall, crashing to the ground, right there in front of me!

I use a mossberg 500 but we are restricted to 00 buck no slugs, you need to be very close, but what a great stock

I am remember those restrictions;) Thats how I took my 1st Blacktail,in behind Cumberland. T'was a load of Federal 00 2.75" Magnums with my a newly purchased 24" Win.1200 smooth bore deer bbl w/rifle sights. I bought that from Mark Jesse when he was working outta his place, that was a while back.

I have a 500 Mossberg also, 24" fully rifled barrel, Weaver one piece base mounted directly to the reciever, Bshnell 1x-4x32 scope, shooting Federal Barnes expanders. I will be hunting in an area where I can use a rifle this year, but the shotgun will likely come along as a backup.

Browning A-Bolt 12 Guage with leupold 1.5-5 and nosler partion golds. Wacks them real good:D Some guy wanted to buy it but his name slips my mind right now, but I think Arch might know him :p Good luck and as Ted would say wack 'em and stack 'em

After reading a lot of posts here re: scopes on your slug guns... I am looking for experiences Pro/Con on using a scope with a slug gun?

Everyone in our group uses iron sights, except for 1 guy who tried a red dot last year and as soon as the first 3 deer (1 large doe and 2 fawn) ran past him (without a shot) he took it off his shotgun and vowed to sell it.

Well my 6X scope probably cost me a doe this week when I was posted. She was about 15 yards away when I noticed her (and she noticed me). Got the gun up but couldn't get a shot off as all she showed me was hind quarters. Had I used my other shotty without the scope I probably would have gotten a broadside shot off and had her. On the flip side though I've also had situations where I've missed shots with open sites when I wished I had my scoped shotty. I'd say take a good look at what most of your opportunities are - are they longer ranges or fast close situations? I've considered getting see thru scope mounts before...

Closely related to this topic, one of my scout rifle scopes, which I could mount on an older ithaca deerslayer shotgun....The reticle popped loose after very few rounds down range. Less than 100 of 308 winchester.

I plan on NOT mounting optics on any of my ithaca shotguns.
If I planned to, it would be a leupold 2.5 fixed scope, due to durability.

Hi!
Some question for you, group. Anyone use a Savage Bolt action?? and can a pistol scope be used for a shotgun or eye relief is too long, cos Handgun scope can take a lot of recoil momentum ??

Thank you
Yves

The only advantage of scopes is that they give you better visiblity in low light condition due to their "light gathering" ability.

Well after reading what all you shotgun sluggers out there will be using, here's my input. My plan wil be to take afield, my Win,1200 with 24" deer barrel and rifled choke tube to launch the good'ol Win. 1oz Foster slug. I installed some Tru-Glo sights on it as well. I'm confident out to 75yds.
And recently I bought a Mossberg 500 20 gauge off a fellow CGN and could'nt resist the offer from SIR which is a 22" fully rifled cantilever ported bbl & Bushnell scope combo, regularly $196.97 on clearance for $156.97,(there's only one left) So having said that, I'll need to do some range testing with different sabot/slugs. Anyone have a suggestion?
Cheers,

Rem 870 rifled with partition gold
Savage 210f with hornady ssr

If you can get the Hornady SSR slugs give them a try they are about 1/2 the price of the partition gold and shoot awesome they are 300grn and 2000 fps as soon as I use the rest of the golds up I will only be useing the hornady. I shot a 9 pointer last season at 174 yards and droped him in his tracks and the slug was just under the skin on the off side, perfect performance in my opinion. The savage will shoot under 2'' at 100 yards and best of all the recoil is very tollerable.
