Coronavirus and its effect on food supplies.

My wife and I were talking about the news this morning about how the Federal Health Minister said to "Stockpile" supplies a couple days ago, so of course that along with social media over blowing things apparently makes for empty shelves in the stores.

Hand sanitizer in short supply!! (And with inflated costs! After all, now is the time to price gouge!)

I didn't by any sanitizer. I didn't by any canned goods. Heck, I don't even have a full tank of petro.

I told my wife not to worry though, the one thing I DO have is a LOT of ammunition!! :D

And in the end when it all turns to ####.... it isn't the guy with the most "gold" who wins (or the most hand sanitizer)...

The one who wins is the guy with the most ammo! :) LOL

~20% of symptomatic cases need a stay in the ICU. That's not going to happen, so expect a lot more than 2-3% dying...

With all the preppers coming out of the woodwork and stroking each other in the other CoronaVirus thread. Folks fantasizing about trading boos, ammos and asking what females are good for in a post apocalyptic world. Now we get a guy (3 post above) who is talking about how he is going to win in the end because he has lots of ammo...I don't know man...this is getting borderline delusional.

Corona-virus has a fatality rate of 3% and if you are young and healthy it's less than 0.5%.... law and order will still exist for the foreseeable future....nothing to get excited about folks.

Everyone laughs at the Prepper, until they don't.

No one in their right mind actually wants a SHTF, but this Virus has already shown that both supply chains and financial markets are very fragile.

If this Virus turns out to be just a "shot across the bows" and things calm down again, it wouldn't be an argument against preparedness : it would just give us more time to be ready for when things really do go south.

We have been blessed in the West with an unprecedented period of posterity and peace since WW 2.

The rest of the World knows that is not the norm for human history.

A very rude wake call will happen.

If you can get ready now, do it. Maybe not for yourself, but for your kids to whom you can impart the mindset, skills and tools.

We are a fragile country (western society as a whole). In World War 2 we lost just under 50000 soldier out of a population of 12 million (1 in 240). In Afghanistan there was around 100 killed out of 30+ million population (1 in 300,000) and there was allot of backlash. We are not prepared for inconvenient or uncomfortable circumstances. As soon as the cases reached 5000 and the death toll goes over 100, this whole country will change forever.

I was talking to my sister about food prep today.
She feels 3 days is lots???
It was a waste of time after that...
I'm thinking maybe 95% of the people just don't get it..
We can't imagine how fast we can slip over the edge..
And maybe never come back
The problem is the deniers will drag us all down..because I can't store, buy enough of anything

we are 72 hours away from anarchy.
it may sound silly or mean or stereotypical but honestly if a person living in the middle of a big city goes 3 days without food (due to natural disaster or financial collapse or whatever) then sh!t starts to get real REAL fasts.
people will do some pretty mean stuff to other people to feed their kids after 3 days.

years ago there was a really sweet sale on 5.56 ammo and i picked up a LOT of it.
at the time i was doing a lot of 3 gun and other stuff so it made sense to stock up as i would be using that probably in a summer or 2.
when i went to pick up the ammo from the local drop off point for Canpar the kid working asked what i needed 5k in ammo for.
without missing a beat i replied..... 5k people live in this town.
the look on that kids face was priceless!

but seriously, im not a prepper but i DO have 2 weeks of canned food for my family of 5 that i picked up on sale a couple years back.
stuff happens.
fire happens, tornadoes happen, floods happen.
if you dont have a 2 week supply of emergency food in your basement with a plastic barrel and iodine tablets then your gonna be one of the people begging others for help.
invest in a couple cans of canned or freeze dried food and some water storage.
the peace of mind alone is worth the investment.

funny enough it was my employer that sent out a booklet a couple years back listing off what everyone should have at home ready in case they need it.
when your employer starts telling you to do that its probably a good idea.
im not gonna say who i work for, but....... i work for the government..... and i wear a uniform.... and my company vehicle has lights and makes loud noises.

plus who dosnt love a #10 can full of beef stroganoff and some freeze dried strawberries for dessert!

The ethics of shopping are certainly interesting to see go by the way side. People in fear have no/little regard for the fellow neighbor.
Case in point, i went to the grocery store today and as I approached the entrance, someone comes out with what has to be two years worth of toilet paper. Then while i'm walking the TP isle..guess what...shelves are cleaned out.
Horde mentality with no regard for ones neighbor.....that saddens and scares me.

Sorry guys but quick noob question, why do I see three dots “...” on powerbench posts? He wrote some good posts but all of them show dots now

Western Societies, pretty much all of them, have become very fragile.

In part a victim of our own success, but there is more to it. There is no will or desire to impart on people, especially of school age, some of the hard lessons our ancestors learned.

Many people reach Adulthood largely unprepared for just life in general, let alone a serious emergency.

Whether now, or some point in the future, we will be tested and found wanting.

Friendly reminder to wash your hands and not get the virus
Or catch it sooner, just like a bad flu, and get immunized. It's really not an Ebola-grade virus...

Other option is to live your life as usual, and call it a day. Once again, it's not an Ebola-grade virus...
