Who uses a 25-06 Rem?

25-06

Rob,

I ended up with a 25-06 kind of by accident, been shooting it for a couple of years now............. and I really like it. Fast, flat, accurate, easy on the shoulder. Other than a rather impressive muzzle blast, whats not to like?

Coyotes and gophers are the only animals unlucky enough to step in front of mine so far. It's very, umm, authoritative out to embarrassingly long ranges on both.

I'm hoping to carry it for deer this fall, for the first time. Basically its a .270 Win but cooler, so it should work.:)

I have used both a 25-06 and 257 Wby. Both are excellent cartridges for deer, nice flat shooting, puts them down fast and not much recoil. the 25-06 is a little more efficient, the 257 Wby hits a little harder, faster and flatter. The deer can't tell the difference.

More than enough for deer, less recoil compared to the 270 ....

Rob, working on my second 25-06. I haven't taken any big game with it yet, but give me a month or so and I'll tell you how it works on mule deer. So far I have found it an easy cartridge to work loads up for, though my second rifle provided some distraction until I figured out the mag box was binding in the stock and messing up accuracy.
One bullet I have found accurate in both rifles is the Hornady 117 BTSP, I'll be trying that on deer in November. I have gotten 3150 with 115 Partitions but haven't been able to get them to shoot great in the current rifle yet so will fuss with them more after the season.
Certainly an easy cartridge to shoot, significantly less kick than a 270! I'm expecting it to perform on deer just like a 270 with 130s, which in my opinion is an absolutely excellent long range deer setup. I'd shoot a moose with a 25-06, if I had nothing else available! Even then, I'd be really fussy about the angle and shot placement.

Pat,

That's the most accurate bullet out of my rifle as well, but, I'll be trying the 110 Accubond this fall. It shoots well enough for hunting, and I feel the bonded construction should help with the speed of the 25-06 in close. I would be very interested to hear how the 117 BTSP performs for you.

I have a second 25-06 on the way as well, although this one will be AIed.:) It is an LH M70 with a Ron Smith 26" barrel. I had hoped to have it for this year, but, not looking good..........so, next year.

I friend that I hunts with one and has used his on deer, antelope, black bear, bighorn and loves it....he use to be a 7mm mag guy and don't think he has shot the 7mm mag since.

It seems like a good cartridge for that end of the spectrum and I think it will work for my daughter when she it old enough.

Don't over look the 257Roberts either.

My 22" 257R gets over 3000fps with Nosler 110 ABs and 3200fps with Hornady 100s. That aint no slouch. ;)

You guys need to try the 120 gr Hornady HP. It is a big game bullet extraordinaire! Very deep penetration and expansion every time.

Ted
I have tried these at the range a couple of times, but already have two good loads for the 257, so they went on the back burner.

They were quite accurate! I should buy some more and have another go at them. :)

Supercub,

I have looked at it seriously but I wanted to get a Sako 85 and the 257 isn't offered...There is a very nice 257 AI on the exchange for sale, beautiful gun.

The 257AI is pretty much equal to the 25/06, but MUCH cooler.

At your age, you need all the cool you can get! ;)

I know I need the help ;)

The only thing about the one in the exchange is that it is a wood/blued one and I like the " I can beat up not care too much about" stainless/sythetic.

And I can pick up the Sako for less than that one...mind you the one listed is probably work the price its listed at.

It's on my list for the next bullet shipment!
My latest 25-06 has a Gaillard barrel, kind of a featherweight profile at 24", in a McMillan Fwt stock on a winchester action. Nice rig for sure. Previous one was a 700 SPS stainless in a Bansner, that shot well also! I understand the hornady 100 grain spitzer is also a good game bullet, but I'm leaning to the heavier bullets for big mule deer.

Have one built. :D brag brag show-off

I haven't hunted with a .25-06 yet. I have a custom .257 AI that has a headspace problem.. Bought it that way unfortunately...:( Anyway I am hoping to have it re-chambered to .25-06 soon here.
In my experience with the .257 AI I found that really tough bullets like the Barnes specifically, were too tough on deer. They seemed to zip right through almost like an FMJ unless you hit solid bone like a shoulder, ribs didn't open them up at all. I went back to "regular" Hornady 117 gr bullets and was very happy with the performance. Will try some Nosler Partitions if I ever go for an elk with it. But for that would probably choose my 30-06 or old .300H&H...

For some long range plinking and Varmint shooting, I picked up a .25-06 Savage 112 BVSS. I've topped it with a Leupold VX-III, 6.5 - 20x long range Varmint Hunter's reticle. The best accuracy I've got is using Sierra 117gr Spitzer BT's & IMR 4350.:) My three shot group at 185 yds measured 0.486". :DPlaying 'golf' at that range just vaporises nailed up golf balls. Probably as close to playing golf as I'll ever come.;)

I have had two 25-06's. First one and best, was stolen 28 years ago. Both used hornadys 120hp. I loaded down to 50 grs. IMR 4831. I loved how accurate and mild these are to shoot on both targets and smaller game up to deer. I have used it on elk but would go to the 117 gr rd nose for more expansion. Both these guns liked the IMR over Hodgsens. I havent loaded any of the newer bullets or powders as this works for me.

25-06

I had one in a ruger MKII SS and it shot the ####s so I sold it but I was going to build one but went with a 257 weatherby and it shoots awsome, the 25 calibres are my favorite for deer by a long shot. First pic is 110gr accubonds at 3500fps and the second is 115gr partition at 3400fps not 3300 like I put on the target, both with Retumbo powder.
