Hello gun nutz!

I’m new to the forums and I am just starting a small collection of remingtons. I’ve been adding to my collection for the past 5 years and I’m mostly interested in older Remington semi autos as well as pump shotguns. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the 16 gauge? Is it a dying gauge or will it remain strong? I have no issue finding guns but ammo is quite expensive.

You have to set up to reload. Finding good hulls is just about impossible now but you can reload what is there and the rest of the items are no problem
I love the 16ga and have quite a few including remingtons in both 1100 and 870's
Cheers

I wouldn't exactly say that the 16 is dying but it has a lot of problem competing with the 12 and 20. Having said that, it has a strong following from a small group of shooters and hunters that recognize that it's a very good cartridge. Most of us that have guns in 16 reload our own shells and although I don't shoot my 16's a lot, I'm always on the look out for shells or components.

I really like shooting 16Ga guns. The ammo is expensive so I reload.I get wads from humasons and make a nice 3/4oz load for skeet.I'm the only guy that shoots 16ga at the the two clubs I shoot skeet at.I own a remington model 58, stevens 530 and a winchester model 12 in 16ga.

I started shooting a 16 when I bought my first one over 40 years ago. At that time, the only gun I'd ever seen my dad hunt with was a 16. His friends told him that 16's were dying out....all through the 50's the 60's and the 70's. Most people who found out i hunted with a 16 said "that gauge is dying", through out the 80s, the 90's, the 00's and the 10's.

Funny, the 16 is still here after at least 70 years of people saying it's dying out. Shoot what you like. I like 16's.

Same here a new 16ga 870 wingmaster in 1965 which I still have and for some odd reason I ordered it with a mod choke and VR which was not the norm back then. Almost all were full choke
Glad I did now
Cheers

Well put!

love the 16, there is no better gauge out there IMO. I have 2 that i shoot almost exclusively, a Browning White Lightning and a Browning Gran Lightning, I likely shouldn't have sold the BPS Medallion 16 that i had, but it wasn't getting used enough. I shoot 16ga for skeet and sporting clays, ammo isn't that hard to find, price is about the same as 28ga or .410 really. Both Lawry's and Hummason's typically have a few cases kickin around. I would love to find an 1100 in 16, not the most common gauge to find them in, but i will one first chance i get.

Love the 16 Gauge. A great upland and pheasant caliber.
I have too many to choose from, 870, 1100, 11, 31, even an old 1900 SxS.
I normally find them at gun shows, lonely, unappreciated and sometimes inexpensive, so they end up following me home.
Ahhh the good old days before Covid-19
:))

Regarding ammunition/reloading.

I suppose I would reload if I spent a lot of time at the range with the 16's. But I don't. I hunt with them. And in 40 years I've never had a problem finding ammo. I just don't wait until the last minute. When I see a load I like, I buy them. Without getting into the round count, I have enough upland loads to last the rest of my life. Waterfowl gets used at a higher rate so I will run out if I don't buy more. But old habits die hard and I will likely continue buying 16 gauge rounds until I can no longer hunt.

I may start reloading anyway as I want to explore various non tox that isn't steel. I'd like to do some comparisons between Kent TM and TSS.

Do you reload any other gauge of shotgun
Cheers

The first couple 16s I bought were 2 9/16” chambered, so I started reloading for them with a 600jr and a roll crimper. I do shoot 16 occasionally for clays games and like to shoot them to stay sharp for hunting. I agree with canvasback in that, if you are primarily hunting with one, shells are no issue.

I even have a box of bismuth loads that I am saving for a special occasion (which means hunting waterfowl with my drilling - LOL). The one shell I have found to be unobtainium are brenneke slugs in 16. Not that I really need them...I just want to try them.

No I do not. I really only shoot 12 and 16 ga. And as we all know, no shortage of 12 ga loads out there.

Understand that is why it is more of an expense to get set up and easier to buy factory
If you reloaded even one of the others adding the 16ga is no big deal since you would already have many of the items you would need
Cheers
