A bunch of us went trap shooting. I really wanted to shoot my Rem 870 Tac-2. For those that don't know - 18.5" barrel, pump, cylinder bore. Everyone else's barrels were 10"+ longer with chokes. Like I said, they laughed at me!

Destroyed 12 and dusted 2 shooting 2¾" Winchester #7½. And I'm a brand spankin' newbie at trap.

Fun times. Now to try and get that number way up.

The Trap and Skeet folks are some of the most pretentious shooters you will encounter - all the pimped out gear, expensive shotgun broken open and over their shoulder, yellow-lensed shooting glasses. A surprising number are anti-hunting.

I love it when some dude in his jeans and well-worn rem 870 shows up to prepare for duck and goose season, does a 22/25, packs up and leaves. Disturbs the dignity and repose of the range, but makes a point.

I've never come across that attitude or behaviour. Yes, I see the expensive guns and the yellow lenses and the gear and all, but every time I've shot at the club, I've never yet once witnessed a condescending attitude or remark. They've all been very friendly, helpful, and just a super bunch. I've got both kinds of guns - a dedicated trap gun, and the workhorses. No one has ever said "That old piece of junk doesn't belong here." I've never encountered the anti-hunting comments either. Sorry to hear that if that's what you've seen at the club.

The same can be said about any group of dedicated shooters. Look at all the fancy camo that waterfowlers wear, and their camo guns, camo bags amd thermoses, a dozen duck calls and 100 decoys around them - are they pretentious because of their pimped out gear and expensive guns? Try showing up at one of those snooty duck camps out east in a pair of jeans and a Mossberg bolt action shotgun sometime.

Grouse Man ,,well written I could not agree more.
Just wondered what you would expected showing up to shoot trap with tactical gun
Likely the same as showing up at a rolling thunder bowling pin shoot with a 30 " trap gun.

By saying pretentious, I am really not sure what you are talking about? Sure some have expensive guns and gear but there are many who shoot with less. BTW, yellow is the least popular color for glasses around experienced trap shooters. Some do not hunt, but I don't know any who are anti hunting. Some are older and physically it is difficult to hunt, but trap is a sport that the older can enjoy and still burn a lot of powder enough to satisfy any gun nut.

I have been hanging around trap and skeet ranges for over 40 years. I may be one of those you call pretentious type with a break gun over my shoulder or I might just have my $98.00 wingmaster. I most likley will be weraring worn jeans, sneakers and a ratty looking good luck vest.

Trust me, when I say that a 22/25 will not make any point. Probably will have to score a 25 and do it a couple times to get any notice.

Next time you see one of these guys with a bunch of pimped out gear, go over and talk guns with him. It might not happen all the time, but do not be surprised if he takes his pimpy break open off his shoulder and offers to let you try it for a round.

Yikes, struck a nerve - sorry. You've never encountered a snooty Trap shooter or club, and I've never encoutered a snooty duck camp or hunter. Good for us.

Just curious, but who was it that laughed? The bunch you went with? or the shooters at the club?

Destroyed count as one but Dusted are ZERO:D Since most newbies score between zero and 25, your score seems slightly below average. I would expect at least 12 since you are using a Tac-2. Your number probably will go up but may may go down. Practice may help, but constructive practice will be your best bet, and may involve instruction. If you goal is to have fun with your Tac-2, have at it, because it is capable of breaking all from the 16 yard line. If your goal is to become a better trap shot, that migh involve changing to equipment more suitable for trap.

If you really want to have fun with your Tac-2, try skeet. There is not a shot on a skeet field that your gun is not capable of hitting and hitting well!

We had a guy with a similar shotgun show up on trap night a few weeks back. One of the older guys made a comment to me shortly after the black gun left.

My take? At least we have another young guy out shooting. That about won over this older guy.

If you're out having fun, so be it. Actually, you can probably score a fair bit better than 12 with that gun once you get a handle on the legal target angles at each station and develop a consistent mount. You have to get on the birds fast and the short barrel will not point very smoothly. Would you say you missed more crossing targets or straight aways? (I'm going to bet on the straights)

If you want to get more serious about trap, well then you're going to need another shotgun :) You can score as well in trap with a $500 pump gun setup for trap as a $25000 Perazzi.

Good point - that gun is much better suited to skeet than trap. The barrel is short, but there's probably enough extra mass from the extended mag tube to give a half-way decent swing.

If you're out shooting, it's all good.

I had shot some clays over the years but not formally. One day I was invited to shoot at a club match. After 7 or 8 clays some one came over and said I couldn't use my shotgun and some else replied that I had gotten all my clays so far with it there was nothing wrong with it. After the first set some of the guys were looking at my gun when a committee of 4 came over and said it was decided I could not shoot any more when a large man pimped to the gills came over and told them to get lost that I had 25/25 and that if I was using their guns I could problably shoot 2 with 1. I got to stay and shoot the rest of the day allbeit a couple of guys went home because they didn't want to be sportsman. My shotgun you ask was a SxS 12 ga. muzzle loader. At the end of the day, 5 stayed to try out my smokepole. Although some of them look pretentious (I find it varies from club/region to club/region) not all of them look down there noses at you. The next time, I showed up with a Wingmaster and they were disappointed I didn't bring the smokepole.

The members that were huffy about your SXS may have been bothered by the smoke or your time to load. It is an ATA rule that states shooters must not be disruptive to the others on a squad. There is a "gentleman's aire" in the sport of trap that is as much a part of the game as the targets that are thrown. It is a fine line between being mindful of tradition and rules, and being a pain in the ass. Seeing as it was just practise, I would have told them to get bent.

I'm not defending them, just stating a possible explanation.

As for me, I would have been in there like a dirty shirt just to say I had tried trap with a smoke pole.:):):)

As for shorties, see the target and get it quick. Skeet would probably be a better suited game for that style of shotgun. MAkes me smile to have a good skeet round with my 870 and an 18" barrel.

i shot 94/100 the other day with my old wingmaster on trap, with a field stocked gun, 28 inch
no matter what you shoot, use it alot, and get good with it

old wingmaster?

I have a fondness for double barrels, but I have an old wingmaster that cost me $98.00. Although I have several barrels for it, I have lobbed the original tube off at 24 inches. I sometimes bring it out when some noobe shooter says something like "I think I would shoot better if I had a fancy/expensive gun like you have" I often let the noobe shoot my fancy iron while I shoot my 98$ special:D

Well then, allow me to enlighten you.

My first time shooting skeet EVER...and I really didn't want to be there ( it was required that I shoot with a member of the "executive" as pat of my initiation) Anyway, I show up with my 22" barreled full camo pump (the gun I have been using for the better part of 10 years for ducks) and the FIRST comment I get from one of the "regular" shooters is "So...you gonna go hold up the mac's milk with that when you are done here?"

The very next comment I get is after missing the first two clays..this is from the "exec": "You know, that really isn't a proper shotgun for clays...maybe when you reach MY level of proficiency you'll want to invest a little more into your equipment"

Heres the funny part. I'm watching the clays fly and am obviously concentrating, so the exec says" What are you thinking about?"
I reply "Bufflehead"
He says: "What?"
I say: "The clays...they are just like bufflehead"
He says: "whats a bufflehead?"
I say: "Nevermind...it makes sense to me"

My remaing score was 23/23...I completely wiped the floor with the snobs that were laughing at my "robbery gun". Last thing I said to the exec?

I pointed at his uber-dollar O/U and said "Imagine what I could do with one of those!"

They exist...trust me.
