Swedish AG42 in Combat? Best semi of WWII?

I just sold a 45 dated one and it was the latest dated one I ever came across. Going on the ones I have sold over the years, 1943 is the most common date I have seen.

I've had a 42, 45 and still have a 43 so they were produced in war time. I've never heard of them being used in combat. While I have to admit I choose a Garand first, I wouldn't complain about an AG42, no matter what the nay-sayers say:p

yeah, with the garand though, your limited to direct fire, with the ag 42, you can lob the brass at them indirect...

All history buffs like to fill gaps between facts with assumptions. We often have to, to get a complete story. Also we often receive stories from people who actually witnessed, what never made the history books.
While I was impressed by the 42, I also have yet to read or receive a first hand story of it in actual WWII combat.

Did the Swedes shoot at anyone in WW2?

Yes they shot at the Russians, as volonteers in two Regiments that fought in the Finnish Winter War. They were armed with Mauser M-96 rifles that were on loan to them by the Swedish Government, these same rifles were left behind in Finland after the Volonteers returned home after the end of the Winter War. Finland only returned the rifles to Sweden after the end of WW2, with nice SA marks as a reminder of their service in Finland.

The decision not to use a detachable rifle was deliberate. The system used is efficient and reliable. Ammunition load is lighter. Detachable magazine loaded rifles can only be topped off if loose rounds are carried. Enblocs are noisy? The famous ping? Doubt that was much a problem in action. How many ringing ears would notice?
Assuming that the AG42 saw limited use, I can't think of any reason to consider it to be in any way superior, or even equal to the M-1, SVT, K43. M-1 was probably the best, (we all know it works), and the US was able to supply them in quantity and support them in the field.
When the Swedes disposed of their 6.5 rifles, the M94 carbines went first, followed by the 42s. Obviously the Swedes didn't consider them to be worth retaining. Some 96s were the last to be surplused.

I would like the Garand design better if the mag could be topped off like the Enfield with chargers or stripper clips as they are known.

Neat info thanx. :)

. Enblocs are noisy and can't be topped off, if you have one round left you have to shoot and reload fast.

if you can still HEAR the ping, after being shot at with 8 rounds of 30-06 and missed (thought I'd add that part, it's even HARDER to hear if you get hit:D) you've got some sort of super human ears. I heard that old story about jerries waiting for the PING to charge, but after shooting a garand I just laugh and shake my head....anyone firing 30-06 or 8mm mauser isn't hearing the little "tink" as the clip pops out

Loading a clip or crossing a field to get at the GI reloading, which can be done quicker?

I do not think the guy crossing the field is still around to answer that question!

Now this thread has me wondering. How many semis did get used in WW2?

1) Garand
2) M1 carbine
3) SVT
4) AG-42 (maybe)
5) SKS (in very small numbers at the very end)
6) G-43 (small numbers)

any others? Didn't France have a semi?

Johnson.
SVS 36
MAS1944?
K/G-43 - small numbers? Certainly not widespread standard issue, but issued in some quantity.

Yes AVS, not SVS. These saw limited use during the Winter War. Apparently they didn't work out all that well. There was also the semi-experimental Federov in 6.5 Japanese, much earlier than WW2, of course, although some were used.
There was also the 38 version of the Tokarev.
The French 1917 and 1918 autoloaders were mostly converted to straight pull bolt actons prior to WW2, and saw second line use.
The Johnson rifles used by the USMC early in the war were ones originally intended for the Dutch East Indies.
Only the US was able to manufacture effective autoloading rifles in large enough quantities for general issue, and support and maintain them. As weapon systems, nothing else even came close.

Did the Swedes shoot at anyone in WW2? ;) :D

The Swedes would shoot at Allied aircraft that had been bombing Germany ...that had strayed over their airspace....i know i read where a Canadian bomber pilot had to put his aircraft into some violent evasive flying to avoid the Swedes searchlights and anti aircraft fire....

Patton was right about the Garand.
Too bad John Garand didn't make it with a detachable mag like the (real) M14. Enblocs are noisy and can't be topped off, if you have one round left you have to shoot and reload fast.

that enbloc noise story is such bull####.
go to crown land or a range, shoot 7 rounds from your garand, take out your earprotection, stand a few yards away and have someone fire the last round.
tell me if you hear a ping..

what a stupid ####ing myth.

Are you sure this isn't in reference to the Swiss?
