I got laughed at the other day...

I used to shoot a lot of Trap. With a very nice Rem. Model 31 Trap. Probably one of the nicest pump guns ever made. A lot of Trap shooters today just seem to frown on Pump Guns. And yes there is a lot of "look what I have attitude" on the Trap Range.

I can only think that a man such as yourself, who has consistently tooted the horn touting acceptance and understanding of all shooting sports, had a momentary lapse of sanity to infer that trapshooters are generally jerks.:(

No I am pointing out that your post was and is rather pretentious.

Some trap shooters are great people.

Some are total jerks..

Some handgunners are great people

Soma are total jerks

From my experience..........those trap shooters think that their GAME is somehow superior fit into the latter catagory. Not to mention those very same shooters seem to have a very tenious grasp of muzzle control.

Wow... this thread took off!

The guys I was with were all good about it. The jabs came across as jest and I got some sincere pats on the back after the round was done. Before the round started, I had offers from several guys to borrow their shotguns - nothing overly special... just something that had a choke!

Overall, the general consensus was very positive. Even the older guys with the nicer hardware were just glad to see a younger guy out enjoying the sport. That's what it's supposed to be about!

There seem to be three games out there. Those who want to shoot trap for fun, and on the other side who are the most serious, who take their shooting serious and want to be the best. Both these groups are very harmless and I think are good for the sport. The #######s are in the middle. They are just wannabes. They are the pretentious ones. Don't have enough sense of ha ha to just have a blast but because they are lacking in superior skill or dedication to get better they attempt to buy their way to respect. Among these pretentious wannabes you will find those who look down on those with more practical guns and look with contempt on those who invest more in their equipment.

Outside of the sport, there is one other group that I find is the most pretentious of all. Those like yourself who are the most pretentious by their silly judgements.

YUK YUK YUK YUK HAR HAR LOLOOLOLOL!!!!

Stormy,

I could have (should have) worded my statement differently, but I hardly consider etiquette and respect for the written Code of Conduct as set out by ATA to be pretentious.

That being said, there is a time and place for steadfast adherance to this code (eg. registered shoots or serious practise time) There is also a time to have a great time shooting some rounds of 'unorthodox' stations, presentations, or firearms with old friends and fresh faces.

Point of fact is, if clubs are not having an ATA shoot, then it's just a bunch of people shooting at clays. Some ATA members are under the notion that every trap target is an ATA target. It's simply not true. Trap clubs throw trap style targets. :)

It is truly unfortunate that so many seem to have had a less than spectacular welcome to the world of clays. I recognize that it has cost us vast numbers of members due to preconceived notions that folks would be unwelcome or frowned upon in the company of more experienced clay shooters with expensive gear.:(

As for your muzzle control statement, I am assuming that you personally disagree with the practice of resting the muzzle of an O/U on your toe between shots. It's a personal preference for each individual shooter. Personally I have used my toe, but only when I have forgotten my magnetic rest. I perfer the rests over my toe for all the obvious reasons. If not, well then we can hopefully leave that can of worms sealed up for another day.;)

My boys and I were treated like royalty in NL, NS and NB whenever we went out to shoot trap and skeet as new shooters.

We try to treat new IPSC shooters well also, and tell them the truth about gear. That is, you can have lots of fun with a lower end gun but if you're serious about the sport you have to be serious about your gear.

We hate to spend loads of time and energy teaching new shooters only to have them get frustrated and quit because their gear doesn't work or they can't keep up with the guys who are totally dedicated to the sport.

If we as shooters take ourselves or our "game" so seriously that we don't want to be distracted by a new shooter with less than ideal gear then we should be prepared to spend a lot of time shooting alone.

This is not pinging on Covey either, I've felt the same frustration - from both directions.

To all, just shoot have fun and shut up! The gun control advocates thrive on B/S talk like this.As gun owners we must all ban together.BE kind and curtious to all,so we can protect this priviledge we still have.Happy Thanksgiving to all !

Just my 2 cents canadian and proud !

Gosh, you must have thought that I included myself in the serious group? Been there, done that, not for me anymore, but I do respect those who wish to take their practice seriously and when I do join them for a round or two, I do everything not to interfere with their game.

I would like to think of myself as being in the fun group and I have not much problems with any type of gun brought to the line as long as the shooter is safe and courteous. If my choice not to spend to much time on the line with a smoke pole, makes me pretentious, so be it.

The pretentious group have asked me to go on patrol with them and to put on my Perazzi cap and vest and help with laughing at Norinco users, but I have to decline, because I no longer own a Perazzi:(:p

Damn, I wish someone had laughed at me at my first visit to a trap club with my 18.5" Remington 870. Think of the money I would have saved over the years.;)

I've owned many other shotguns since then but I still have the 870 and take it out from time to time.

CB, I do not think you are the type to be laughed out of anywhere:D and I do not believe you would ever think that money saved by not buying guns is a good thing. What profit it a man to gain the whole world but loose his enjoyment of shooting.

There are gun and equipment snobs in all types of shooting, luckily they are not the norm, though they are annoying when you encounter one. Even CGN itself tends to lean towards the pro-Eurogun snobery, though we all know that North American made firearms are vastly superior.:p

:p I do not think that they are superior, but now days just cost more to produce. I still think the best quality bang for the buck is Japan! I can not wait for them to make win 21's and parker copies because that would be  with me!

I meet the occassional doorknob at the pistol range I go to. Take the other day when I was at the club and this fella keeps crowding my space talking to his buddy with half his body in my firing bench. After several times of asking him to politely move I simply starting going to town with the 629 with full magnum loads (against the target I should add). He soon got the idea and him and his limp wristed buddy packed up shop. Perhaps he found me attractive or something, I really don't know. Anyway, to one of the points raised - you find #######s everywhere. Sometimes you just have to be creative and use the right tool for the job.

i've only shot skeet/trap twice. once with a stock HP-9 14" and once with a 870 16". both time i got smiles and the same " it'll be easier with a longer gun. want to borrow mine?"

no one ever laughed at me, only with me. just made people smile.

BTW i suck at it. 8/25 with the 14" and 7/25 with the 16". i guess i'll head up again with my 12.5 inch, brobee aimpoint one next!

Never been laughed at yet at our club. Great bunch of fellas, and very supportive with all kinds of advice. I use an old Remington 1100 field gun, that I turned into a trap gun(thanks to some beautiful wood from WGP). She's a real beaut sittin' on the rack next to all those O/U's. The older trap shooters pick her out of the lineup and fondle her, she how she points, etc. Must bring back memories for them. Recoil so soft, and points like a dream. I often wonder why the O/U have become so popular? Ease of cleaning perhaps?

I love it when some dude in his jeans and well-worn rem 870 shows up to prepare for duck and goose season, does a 22/25, packs up and leaves. Disturbs the dignity and repose of the range, but makes a point.

That's exactly what I did several years back. (had a tough time with the one's that came out of the machine hard left) Only I said " That's it? That's all you guys do?":D They knew I was kidding.

I made it a point a long time ago to go to couple league-nights for all the disciplines or club offers even if I had no real interest in those disciplines. Just to "rub elbows" and show some club members that us evil IPSC shooters are ordinary people too.

most of the guys laugh in good fun,no hard feelings. I've shot with black powder (Not comp) a norinco ithica clone and some old sXs and the folks just stand back & laugh. They are also quick to point out any prob. and advice is always good.Good guys & fun to be with

never ran in to a snob, or not that i notcist. i shoot once a year at KCCC with undertaker. i shoot a 195k mossberg bolt 12ga. and my dad shoots a 20 ga. 870 express. are scores dont realy mater mostly cuse i cant rember:) but we always leave with a smile and a sore sholder. planing on coming back the next year.
had one guy complane that my 195k was spitting sidways so i cleend the barrel, every one else just gave me advice in how to improve my shot.
