Firearms reform rumored release this week.

I really wish we could do open carry protests like in the US to show people that they have nothing to be afraid of. That would speak volumes right now I believe, even if not helpful long term. Many Canadians calling for these laws have never been shooting, many have likely never seen a firearm in person before besides an officer's. They have no background on the subject besides media and Hollyweird. Sad day.

sending this today to my MPP

Your party is about to push through an ill-advised Order In Counsel (OIC).
No only does this OIC circumvent the traditional debate in house of commons the end result will not have any effect on the safety of the citizens of Canada.

Within our boarders we seen an increase in gun violence. These guns time and time again have been traced back to smuggling from the US. This OIC does nothing to address that.

We all see on the news the mass shootings in the US and want to ensure that doesn't happen here. A key point that gets continuously overlooked when people compare the US semi-automatic rifles (including the AR-15) to Canadian semi-automatic rifles is that after the tragedy at Ecole Polytechnique we restricted ALL rifle magazines to 5 rounds. There is no way to "Spray Bullets" or go on an "Mass Shooting" like they do in America.

There is no empirical data to support why these specific firearms should be removed from legal owners.

I fear that your party has been hearing from constituents that they are scared. You need to show that you are doing something. Instead of doing the hard things that will actually make a difference (dedicating resources at the border, enforcing existing laws) you are choosing the easy path to what looks good today in the media.

In the end you will spend hundreds of millions of dollars confiscating personal property, make paper criminals out of otherwise extremely law abiding citizens and not make the country any safer.

Just in closing, more Canadians drown in hot tubs in one year than were killed by an AR-15 in all years combined. You are focusing your efforts on the wrong things.

I do hope that you've sent it to your MP not MPP!

Pretty much. All freedom loving Canadians move to the US, all commies in America can move to Canada, hell we'll give em CA, OR, WA and the commie New England States. Then we build a wall, they can have their free sh*t, we can have our freedom. Probably the only thing that would prevent civil war in America at this point...

Same here. I picked my undergraduate program in large part because its the field that has the most petitions for green cards. I start my program this summer. Four more years in this sh*thole country then I'm gone. I want to do all my Co-ops in the US to build connections for when I graduate, and If by the grace of god I get a permanent job offer before I graduate, I'll be on the first plane to America, I can finish my education there or learn it on the job.

Same here. I was going to take that student benefit and buy a G48 and build an AR15, give that money to hard working Canadian gun stores employees.

Maybe you'll get lucky and land a smokin' hot gal (or guy, depending) and get hitched!

Minister Blair has a hate on for law abiding citizen gun owners and an agenda.

What did he do to prevent more loss of life after 6 am?

Did the continuation of the carnage suit his agenda.

Only Bill knows for sure.

Here is my prediction.

The OIC will ban NR guns, as AR15 is restricted by legislation. The AR15 and variants ban will come later.
The ban on the NR rifles will be to effectively close the tap on sales immediately. They will declare an immunity period for owners claiming they need time to structure and legislate on the buyback program.

By banning NR rifles, they can never be held accountable to an actual number of firearms that must be turned in and bought back since no registry exists.

They also do not have to revoke registration certificates, making the appeal process from the IRG thread irrelevant.

Wendy will be happy. Most gun owners of the affected firearms will keep them, some will get caught with them over the next 2 decades. These will be processed through the justice system, business as usual, and a few headlines along the way about assault weapons being taken out of circulation thanks to the liberal gun control move of 2020.

Then a few more shootings and madmen will keep the gun control flame alive and well, until the next round of gun control proposals.

All of this will insure Liberal votes for many terms to come, and gun owners will go about their business because banning 12 guns wont alienate enough people nor have any type of significant impact on the gun community and industry to yield a revolution. Some noise will be made, but it will be just noise.

Youza.

imho, if anything happens, this is the way it will initially go...

Stop giving them ideas. What are you trying to prove that you are some sort of policy analyst? You want a cookie if your prediction comes true?

I worked in government and quickly left.. they are clueless and look to other jurisdictions for policy ideas and regulation tactics. Their analysts will also scour open source media (internet) for ideas.

Please do not arm the 20- some old lazy government analyst with ideas.

From our friends at the CCFR.

The Trudeau government is preparing to implement part of the promised firearms reform through regulation, the CBC has learned. Ottawa could act as early as this week to ban certain weapons.

As another gun tragedy has just rocked the country, the Liberals seem determined to quickly turn this crucial part of their electoral platform into reality.

Regulatory changes could be published in the Official Canada Gazette as early as Friday.

The Minister of Public Safety has submitted a recommendation to the Prime Minister of Canada, who must give final approval.

According to our information, this proposal aims in particular to ban 11 types of weapons.

Justin Trudeau could give his approval today, while final discussions are still underway.

In the last election campaign, the Liberals promised to ban military-style assault weapons, including the AR-15 rifle.

It’s not yet known when these changes will take effect, or whether there will be a short-term buy-back program. The Prime Minister's Office declined to comment on the matter.

Liberal election promises

Ban military-style assault weapons, including the AR-15;
Establish a buy-back program for all military-style assault weapons legally purchased in Canada;
Work with the provinces and territories to give municipalities the ability to further restrict or ban firearms.

Poly remembers on the lookout

The Poly lobby group remembers eagerly awaiting the proposed reform. Spokesman Heidi Rathjen writes: We hope to see a similar approach to that of New Zealand, which would include the Ruger Mini-14, the weapon that was used during the polytechnic killing.

For the moment, Radio-Canada has not been able to confirm which weapons are subject to the ban.

The group also warns that this ban will have to be accompanied by more in-depth changes.

The ban on existing models by regulation should be followed by a more general reform of the classification system, which still allows for the introduction of new assault models, said Rathjen.

More details will follow.
