I used to do a lot of duck/ goose hunting back when lead was legal. ( been a while lol....). Haven't really shot steel so I was wondering what shot size would be a good size for all round Teal to Trumpeter Swans.

Disclaimer: I do not endorse nor have I ever shot at Trumpeter swans. ( For those who don't appreciate alliteration. )

Personally, I would not shoot one shot size at everything, but if you are going to force an answer it would be 3" #2's.

I use 2 3/4" #4 for early teal and woodies, then switch to 3" #3's for mid-season mallards, then switch to 3" #2's for late season divers, and pretty much stick with 3" BB for all goose hunting.

I shoot a mixed bag most days, we have everything from Greater Canadas to Ross' geese and Mallards to Teal on the same hunt. when shooting steel, I prefer to use bigger shot like #1 or BB for the big geese, and prefer #3 or #4 for the smaller ducks. But if I'm not switching shells I use #2's like others have posted. I actually prefer to shoot Bismuth or Tungsten matrix shot, but a that's a whole 'other discussion!

On decoyed birds 3" 2's at 1500fps. It's a little bit much on teal and a little underpowered for cranes but I have used it on all of them and have rarely been wanting unless they are at considerable distance.

Pretty much this except I run 2 3/4" most of the time if I'm not shooting my 20 gauge.

Personally, I would use BB's. Many times I had ducks come into my Canada goose decoy spread, of course no time to remove the BB's and load-up #4's. Ducks received the brunt of BB's. However, if I was hunting ducks with #4's and geese came into the spread, the #4's would have a hard time penetrating the thick feathers or breaking big wing bones. Therefore, BB's would be my choice for only one shot size.
